Notes: The early stages of the decomposition process in the ternary Cu-9 wt.% Ni-6 wt.% Sn alloy have been studied by transmission electron microscopy. The supersaturated solid solution was found to decompose through the spinodal mechanism into periodic and aligned regions which are Sn-rich and Sn-lean. It was also found that in addition to this clustering reaction, an ordering reaction also progressed with the ageing treatment to produce a metastable phase with the DO22 (Al3Ti type) structure. However, on prolonged ageing, a discontinuous reaction started at the grain boundaries and consumed the matrix leaving behind colonies of a pearlitic product composed of the equilibrium α (A1 structure) and the γ (DO3 structure) phases. This paper discusses the mechanism of formation of the DO22 phase in the alloy.

Notes: [Auszug] To achieve this, three values of the frequency shifts must be assumed. For convenience, the shifts of the longitudinal component arising from the elastic waves moving approximately along the direction [144], which is inclined at about 10 to [011], and the longitudinal and transverse components of ...

Notes: [Auszug] The 'OH' quality was irradiated by neutrons in the APSARA reactor (Trombay) by the courtesy of the Indian Atomic Energy Commission. The Integrated neutron flux hours were 47 X 10U neutrons/cm.2. The specimen was coloured violet-brown after irradiation. The variation of C with wave-length for the ...

Notes: Abstract Polar Kerr rotation (PKR) spectra in the range 2.0–5.7 eV at 295 K of lithium ferrite and yttrium iron garnet (YIG) single crystals are reported. The spectra show more details and cover a more extended energy region than those published so far. The interpretation of the spectra is based on the assumptions that 1) PKR is an odd function of the sublattice magnetic moments 2) the origin of PKR in both compounds is of similar nature, the differences due to the different crystal structures (garnet and spinel) being less important. The calculated PKR sublattice components show some similarities in their energy dependences, the magnitude of the tetrahedral sublattice component being higher than that of the octahedral one. The components were used in the calculation of the PKR spectra in diamagnetically substituted yttrium iron garnet (J. Appl. Phys.49, 2212, 1978). The results correctly predict the trends observed experimentally.

Notes: Abstract The room temperature tensile properites of a Zr-1.9 wt % Cr alloy have been examined in the beta quenched as well as in tempered conditions and the results have been rationalized in terms of possible hardening mechanisms. The appearance of the fracture surfaces has been correlated to the microstructures developed in the alloy after various heat-treatments.

Notes: Abstract The precipitation of ZrCr2, which is a Laves phase with the C15 structure, in a supersaturated, martensitic matrix has been studied in a Zr-1.9 wt % Cr alloy using transmission electron microscopy. The nucleation, morphology and distribution of the precipitates has been examined at different tempering temperatures. The crystallographic orientation relationship between the α-Zr(Cr) and the ZrCr2 phases has been established and the precipitate habit plane determined.

Notes: Abstract The morphology and the substructure characterizing the martensite produced on beta quenching a Zr-1.9 wt % Cr alloy have been examined by optical and transmission electron microscopy. The structural changes that occur in the martensite structure on tempering at various temperatures in the α+ZrCr2 phase field have also been investigated.
