Notes: [Auszug] We have studied the recurrence tendency of geomagnetic activity for the three-year period 1950-53. A plot of three-day running means of the international magnetic character figures C for this period indicates that sequences of magnetic activity last much longer than has been thought hitherto. Our ...

Notes: There have been numerous attempts to explain the fall of the Mughal Empire; and I truly feel great hesitation in adding myself to the long list of its exponents. To historians like Irvine and Sarkar, the decline could be explained in terms of a personal deterioration in the quality of the kings and their nobles. The harem influence grew—and women, for some strange unscientific reason, are always supposed to be a bad influence. The kings and nobles became more luxury loving, though no-one has yet established that the Mughals during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries enjoyed any less luxurious mode of living than their eighteenth-century successors. Sarkar, in his monumental History of Aurangzib, also elaborated upon the traditionally recognized factor, namely, Hindu–Muslim differences: Aurangzib's religious policy is thought to have provoked a Hindu Reaction that undid the unity that had been so laboriously built up by his predecessors.

Notes: Abstract The composition and the stability of chemically etched, mechanically polished and oxidized surfaces of single crystals of cadmium-telluride were studied by secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS), Rutherford backscattering (RBS) and ellipsometry. CdTe surfaces etched using a solution of bromine in methanol were found to be enriched in cadmium but a film, identified to be an oxide of tellurium, was observed to grow on it at room temperature and in air. The thickness of this film increased over long periods of timet linearly versus lnt. Mechanically polished samples and also chemically etched surfaces which were oxidized in a solution of hydrogen peroxide in amoniac were found to be stable.

Notes: Abstract The prevalence of iron-deficiency anemia was defined in 105 patients with inflammatory bowel disease and an appraisal made of the diagnostic value of serum ferritin for the assessment of iron stores. Iron deficiency, defined by the absence of bone-marrow hemosiderin was found with anemia in 36% of 41 patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) and 22% of 64 patients with Crohn's disease (CD). Iron deficiency without impaired erythropoiesis was detected in an additional 32% of patients with UC and 2% with CD. Anemia with plentiful bone-marrow iron was present in 33 (51%) of patients with CD, only one of whom had vitamin B12 deficiency. Red blood cell morphology, RBC indices, serum iron, and percent transferrin saturation correlated poorly with stainable marrow iron. Serum ferritin, assayed in samples from 45 patients, was 〈18 ng/ml in 4/12 with iron-deficiency anemia and 0/5 with absent marrow iron and a normal hemoglobin level; values 〉55 ng/ml were invariably associated with the presence of marrow hemosiderin. Based on a lower normal limit of 18 ng/ml, the serum ferritin had an excellent predictive value (100%) but a high predictive error (32%) in the diagnosis of iron deficiency in inflammatory bowel disease. Serum ferritin 〉55 ng/ml ruled out iron deficiency as the basis for anemia.

Notes: Summary Retinal adaptations to a tide pool environment in ten species of fishes belonging to as many families were studied. These fishes may be grouped into typical or temporary tide pool inhabitants. The retinal structure of these forms may be grouped into three categories viz. 1. visually dependent (good acuity and sensitivity), 2. specialised for dim environments (high sensitivity at the cost of acuity), and 3. poor visual ability.

Notes: Abstract 197Hg,199Tl and199Au ions were implanted into Zn single crystals. From time differential perturbed e−-γ and β-γ angular correlation experiments with the 5−/2 states in197Hg and199Hg, respectively, the quadrupole interaction for Hg in Zn is reinvestigated. Only the data for the199Au sample exhibit a single unique quadrupole precession pattern in agreement with the result of the lattice location studies by use of the channeling technique, which show Hg to occupy random lattice sites in Zn while Au is substitutional. From the measured interaction frequency, sign and magnitude of the effective electric field gradient for Hg on the substitutional site in Zn is determined asV zz eff = +15.2(1.8)×1017V·cm−2. By comparison of this value to the corresponding lattice field gradient contribution an electronic enhancement factor ofK(HgZn)=2.6 is deduced in disagreement with a previous derivation of this quantity, but which supports the proposal that the electronic field gradient depends linearly upon the valence of the impurity probe atom.
