Description / Table of Contents: Abstract Self-excited vibrations of a one-degree-of-freedom system can be quenched by attaching an additional spring-mass-damper system to the original system, provided its parameters are appropriately chosen. This additional system is frequently referred to as a ‘vibration absorber’, although in this case the damping is essential, in opposition to the well known vibration absorber for forced vibrations. One disadvantage of these ‘absorbers’ is that they have to be well tuned with respect to the parameters of the basic system. In the present note we examine how nonlinear damping can be used to quench self-excited vibrations or at least to achieve periodic solutions with small amplitudes over a large range of parameters.

Notes: Abstract The problem of the motion of a string attached to a satellite on a circular orbit, as treated by Singh and Demin, is reconsidered. In their paper they discuss problems of uniqueness and stability. In particular the radial equilibrium positions were found to be unstable in a certain sense. In the present paper it is shown that: (i) with the stability definition used by Singh and Demin the equilibrium of a string hanging in a uniform gravity field would also be unstable; (ii) a definition of stability more appropriate for continuous systems would establish the stability of the string both in orbit and in a uniform gravity field.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The destabilizing effect of linear inner damping on rotating shafts with a single disc is well-known. Inner damping forces can however in general not be well described by linear functions, but may only be reproduced with some accuracy with nonlinear terms. In this paper, nonlinear inner damping as well as nonlinear restoring forces are considered, the stability of the vertical and of the horizontal shaft are discussed and non-trivial stationary solutions are also examined. The obtained results confirm to a certain extent the behavior of a rotating shaft found by Tondl.

Notes: Abstract This paper is concerned with a coplanar pursuit-evasion problem in which a faster evaderE with constant speedw〉1 must pass between two pursuersP 1,P 2 having unit speed, the payoff being the distance of closest approach to either one of the pursuers. The control variables are the directions of the velocities ofP 1,P 2, andE. The path equations are integrated, and a closed-form solution is obtained in terms of elliptic functions of the first and second kind. A closed-loop solution is given graphically in several diagrams, for different values ofw.

Notes: Abstract A constant-speed coplanar model with unlimited turn-rates leads to a rather simple geometrical solution of the problem of point capture of two successive evaders in minimum total time: the pursuer concentrates first on the nearer evader who runs in an appropriate direction; the second evader runs directly away from the predictable point of capture of the first evader. This simple solution is valid only if the second evader remains thereby the further of the two evaders. Otherwise, the solution must be modified to include a phase involving curved motion by all three players, during which the pursuer remains equidistant from both evaders.
