Notes: Abstract— The dopamine (DA) content of the canine renal cortex is greater than can be attributed to its presence in noradrenergic axons only. Most of the excess DA is in the outer part of the cortex. By fluorescence histochemistry numerous catecholamine-containing axons are seen to be associated with renal cortical arteries and arterioles. The fluorescence is abolished following treatment of animals with 6-hydroxydopamine or with reserpine, but is restored to some axons if reserpine is followed by systemic administration of 1-DOPA. This procedure does not restore fluorescence to atrial noradrenergic axons after reserpine-induced depletion. Pretreatment of animals with guanethidine abolishes axonal fluorescence and depletes tissue NA and DA from atrium, but in renal cortex the tissue DA level is little affected and some fluorescent axons remain. These results are discussed in the light of previous functional evidence for dopaminergic autonomic axons in the canine kidney.

Notes: Abstract With the velocity filter SHIP at the heavy ion accelerator UNILAC the energy dependence of the evaporation residues production in the reaction40Ar+164Dy was investigated. The results show a much smaller shift of the (204Po, xn) excitation functions with respect to theoretical predictions than has been reported by other authors.

Notes: Abstract At the mass spectrometer LOHENGRIN of the Institut Laue-Langevin the ionic charge state distributions of235U(n th,f)-fission products separated according to their mass, nuclear charge and kinetic energy were determined. The mean values and the widths of the ionic charge state distributions are compared with semiempirical predictions. Deviations between the experimental data and the estimation of Nicolaev and Dmitriev are found. Furthermore, the influence of the internal conversion process on the ionic charge state distribution of highly ionized fission products was established. Internal conversion is observed mainly for odd-odd nuclei and nuclei with 59 neutrons. The Auger cascade following the internal conversion process shifts the ionic charge state distribution by about 3 charge units. The yield of conversion electrons per fragment was determined in the mass range 85≦A≦103.

Notes: Summary Primary vestibular projections to the ipsilateral abducens nucleus were found in cats by injecting anterograde tracer substances (radioactive proline and fucose) into Scarpa's ganglion. Labelling was observed in the rostral and middle portion of the abducens nucleus.

Notes: Summary During the period 1970 to 1977, a total of 9,230 fine needle biopsies of cold nodules of the thyroid gland were performed. 1,097 preoperative aspiration smears could be controlled by a later histological examination of the surgical specimens. There were 422 follicular tumours of which 311 were simple adenomas, 42 atypical adenomas and 69 diagnosed as encapsulated or widely invasive carcinomas. All atypical adenomas and localized carcinomas were extensively reexamined by histology to clarify or exclude invasiveness. Cytological criteria for the differentiation of follicular adenomas and carcinomas with special regard to atypical adenomas were formulated on the basis of these 422 tumours. Additionally, 68 cytological imprints were available from fresh surgical material. The criteria for the cytological diagnosis were decided by details of chromatin structure and nuclear membrane. Simple adenomas are characterized by relatively small and round nuclei with distinct nuclear membranes and evenly distributed, finely granular chromatin. In contrast, atypical adenomas may exhibit larger nuclei with round to oval shape and nuclear overlapping is also sometimes found. Nuclei of follicular carcinomas are even larger and show a characteristically coarsely granular and dense chromatin structure. The nuclear outlines are often irregular and indistinct. Nuclear crowding is very common. In oxyphilic carcinomas nucleolar atypia is an important feature. Examination of technically optimal smears stained with Pappenheim — dye using 100-fold magnification with oil-immersion is essential. False positive diagnoses were not made except for two atypical adenomas staged as Papanicolaou-group IV. False negative diagnoses were relatively frequent amounting to 27.5%. This was almost always caused by insufficient material or puncture at the wrong site in the thyroid. The importance of cytological diagnosis using imprints during surgery is emphasized by the excellent accordance of cytology and histology.

Notes: Summary Percutaneous absorption of aescin was measured following application of an aqueous solution of tritiated sodium aescinate to the ventral skin of pigs. Following single or repeated application at various intervals, the concentration of total activity, non-volatile activity and aescin activity following TLC was determined in different organs, tissues, blood and urine. Very high concentrations of aescin were found in skin and muscular tissues underlying the application site. Only low values were measured in internal organs, blood, urine, skin and musculature from other parts of the body. The concentration of non-volatile activity in subcutis is 50–600 and in musculature 10–50 times higher than in blood. Only 0.5 – 1% is excreted in urine within 24 hours of administration. The calculated total elimination (bile + urine) may be 1 – 2.5% of the dose. Barely one half is excreted as native aescin, the rest as volatile activity and different metabolites.
