    Notes: Summary Using ionization chambers, aluminium activation, TLD and scintillation counters 3-dimensional total dose-distributions, stardose-distributions and pion stop-distributions have been measured in a single pion beam for various momenta and momentum spreads. It is demonstrated how these data will be used as an input into the therapy-planning program. The techniques developed are suited to check dynamical treatment with 60 pion beams.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary Between 1950 and 1962 chamois (Rupicapra r. rupicapra L.) were reacclimatized in the Jura Mountains (Switzerland). By now the populations are estimated to number 3000–3500. The body weight, dimension of skull and growth-pattern of the horns have been used as indicators of the quality of the populations. The mean weights of the bucks (of all age classes) and of the juvenile females are higher than most of those of the compared populations, while adult females are comparatively light. The skulls of adult chamois are larger in the Jura Mountains than in the Alps, the difference being more prominent in males. Their dimensions are comparable with chamois of New Zealand and Elbsandstein (Eastern Germany), whose populations are also established artificially. The trend towards increased body dimensions leads to the conclusion that the condition of the animals is good and that the habitat is suitable, especially as regards the quality of food. In adult females this advantage is presumably absorbed by an increased breeding activity, thus resulting in the accentuated sexual dimorphism. In their first two years of life chamois of the Jura Mountains show an excessive increase of the horns at the expense of later growth. This pattern of growing could be connected with the recent establishment of the populations and with the stated early age of first breeding, as has been described in other Artiodactyla.
    Abstract: Résumé Le chamois (Rupicapra r. rupicapra L.), réacclimaté dans le Jura Suisse de 1950 à 1962, atteint aujourd'hui un effectif dépassant 3'000 individus. Le poids, les dimensions du crâne et la croissance des cornes sont considérés comme étant des indicateurs de l'état qualitatif général des populations. Les boucs de toutes les catégories d'âge et les femelles dont la croissance n'est pas encore terminée sont plutôt lourds comparés à des chamois d'autre provenance. Par contre, le poids moyen des femelles adultes est relativement faible. Les crânes des chamois jurassiens adultes sont en moyenne plus grands que ceux des chamois alpins. Cette différence est plus accentuée chez les mâles que chez les femelles. D'autre part, en ce qui concerne la grandeur du crâne, les populations jurassiennes sont à peu près équivalentes à celles de la région de l'“Elbsandstein” (Allemagne de l'Est) ou celles de la Nouvelle Zélande, toutes deux non autochtones. A en juger par le poids et les dimensions crâniennes, l'état de santé du chamois jurassien est généralement bon, les biotopes qu'il habite lui conviennent et lui fournissent notamment une nourriture de bonne qualité. Pour les femelles adultes les avantages que représentent les biotopes favorables semblent plutôt se traduire par une forte activité reproductrice que par le poids et les dimensions du corps augmentés, ce qui expliquerait le dimorphisme sexuel accentué. Les chamois du Jura accusent une forte croissance de la corne dans les deux premières années de vie au dépens des accroissements des années ultérieures. Comme il a été observé chez d'autres Artiodactyles ce fait pourrait être typique pour les populations jeunes, dont le nombre d'individus est en augmentation et dont les femelles mettent bas pour la première fois à un âge relativement bas.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Die Gemsbestände (Rupicapra r. rupicapra L.) im Jura, die auf Aussetzungen in den Jahren 1950–1962 zurückgehen, sind bis heute auf über 3000 Individuen angewachsen. An Hand von Körpergewicht, Schädelgröße und Krickelwachstum sollen Rückschlüsse auf den qualitativen Zustand der Populationen gezogen werden. Die Böcke aller Alterskategorien und die unausgewachsenen Geißen sind im Vergleich mit Gemsen anderer Herkunftsgebiete eher als schwer zu bezeichnen, adulte Geißen sind dagegen verhältnismäßig leicht. Ausgewachsene Juragemsen haben etwas (Geißen) resp. beträchtlich (Böcke) größere Schädel als Alpengemsen, sind dagegen gleich groß wie die Gemsen in Neuseeland und im Elbsandsteingebiet (diese beiden Bestände beruhen auch auf Aussetzungen). Aus der Tendenz zu Körpervergrößerung wird auf gute Kondition der Individuen, auf eine ausreichende Biotopqualität, insbesondere auf ein gutes qualitatives Nahrungsangebot geschlossen. Bei den Adultgeißen wird dieser Vorteil vermutlich durch die Belastung einer überdurchschnittlichen Fortpflanzungsleistung aufgehoben, so daß der verstärkte Sexualdimorphismus auftritt. Bezüglich Gehörnwachstum zeigen Juragemsen ein überdurchschnittliches Wachstum in den ersten zwei Altersjahren, auf Kosten des späteren Zuwachses. Dieses Wachstumsmuster dürfte, wie es schon bei anderen Artiodactyla nachgewiesen wurde, mit dem geringen Alter der Bestände und mit herabgesetztem erstem Setzalter der Juragemsen in Beziehung stehen.

    Notes: Abstract In a bounded simple connected region G ⊂ ℝ3 we consider the equation $$L\left[ u \right]: = k\left( z \right)\left( {u_{xx} + u_{yy} } \right) + u_{zz} + d\left( {x,y,z} \right)u = f\left( {x,y,z} \right)$$ where k(z)⪋ 0 whenever z ⪋ 0.G is surrounded forz≥0 by a smooth surface Γ0 with S:=Γ0 ⋂ {(x,y,z)|=0} and forz〈0 by the characteristic $$\Gamma _2 :---(x^2 + y^2 )^{{\textstyle{1 \over 2}}} + \int\limits_z^0 {(---k(t))^{{\textstyle{1 \over 2}}} dt = 0} $$ and a smooth surface Γ1 which intersect the planez=0 inS and where the outer normal n=(nx, ny, nz) fulfills $$k(z)(n_x^2 + n_y^2 ) + n_z^2 |_{\Gamma _1 } 〉 0$$ . Under conditions on Γ1 and the coefficientsk(z), d(x,y,z) we prove the existence of weak solutions for the boundary value problemL[u]=f inG with $$u|_{\Gamma _0 \cup \Gamma _1 } = 0$$ . The uniqueness of the classical solution for this problem was proved in [1].
