    Notes: Abstract It is known that a single dose of a neuroleptic can elicit dopaminergic supersensitivity in animals. On the other hand, the clinical syndrome of tardive dyskinesia takes many months or years to develop. To resolve this apparent discrepancy, it is possible that subclinical or latent tardive dyskinesia is fully compensated in most patients taking neuroleptics. In others, where the tardive dyskinesia is full-blown and grossly apparent, the dopaminergic supersensitivity may be decompensated. Such compensatory and decompensatory phases have been proposed earlier by Hornykiewicz (1974), in the case of Parkinson's Disease. Dopaminergic supersensivity persists for a period proportional to the length of the neuroleptic treatment. It is not yet clear whether the relation between the length of treatment and the persistence of supersensitivity holds for very long treatments but in principle the relationship might account for the persistence of tardive dyskinesia after years of neuroleptic pretreatment.

    Notes: Abstract The radial pattern of syenite and syenodiorite dikes of the Spanish Peaks region is analysed using theories of elasticity and dike emplacement. The three basic components of Odé's model for the dike pattern (a pressurized, circular hole; a rigid, planar boundary; and uniform regional stresses) are adopted, but modified to free the regional stresses from the constraint of being orthogonal to the rigid boundary. Dike areal density, the White Peaks intrusion, the strike of the upturned Mesozoic strata, and the contact between these strata and the intensely folded and faulted Paleozoic rocks are used to brient the rigid boundary along a north-south line. The line of dike terminations locates the rigid boundary about 8 km west of West Peak. The location of a circular plug, Goemmer Butte, is chosen as a point of isotropic stress. A map correlating the location of isotropic stress points with regional stress parameters is derived from the theory and used to determine a regional stress orientation (N82E) and a normalized stress magnitude. The stress trajectory map constructed using these parameters mimics the dike pattern exceptionally well. The model indicates that the regional principal stress difference was less than 0.05 times the driving pressure in the West Peak intrusion. The regional stress difference probably did not exced 5 MN/m2.

    Notes: Summary In the isolated rat vas deferens, various 2-substituted adenosine derivatives and adenosine inhibited contractions elicited by field stimulation but had little effect on responses to exogenous noradrenaline. 2-Chloroadenosine, 2-bromoadenosine, 2-hydroxyadenosine and 2-fluoroadenosine were all more potent than adenosine. Theophylline antagonized the action of the 2-substituted derivatives. The inhibitory action of adenosine was potentiated by dipyridamole, 2-amino-6-[(2-hydroxy-5-nitro)benzylthio]-9-β-d-ribofuranosylpurine (HNBTG) or 2′-deoxycoformycin while that of 2-chloroadenosine was not altered by any of these drugs or by phenoxybenzamine, atropine or indomethacin. Pretreatment of the vas deferens with both HNBTG and 2′-deoxycoformycin eliminated the difference in inhibitory potency between adenosine and 2-chloroadenosine. These results indicate that 2-substituted adenosine derivatives, like adenosine, produce inhibition of transmission by acting on a presynaptic site which can be blocked by theophylline. The high apparent potency of 2-chloroadenosine compared to adenosine appears to be duc to the former being neither taken up nor deaminated, while the apparent potency of adenosine is masked by uptake and deamination in this tissue.
