    Notes: Abstract Negative ions are computed to be formed on a time scale and in quantities such that they may be a cause of plasma instability observed in low pressure electrical discharge convection CO2 lasers. In a typical CO2−N2−He−H2O laser mixture the principal ions are CO 3 − , CO 4 − and H− with the total negative ion densityn − given by 0.1n e 〈n −〈n e , wheren e is the electron density: but if the gases are re-cycled or if there is an air leak NO 2 − and NO 3 − are formed in significant amounts andn − can become greater thann e in a time considerably less than the gas dwell time in the electrical excitation discharge. CO is effective in reducingn − in a system without re-cycling, but is ineffective in a re-cycled system with the oxides of nitrogen present.

    Notes: Summary The activity of single neurons within the hand area of the precentral motor cortex of primates was recorded during the performance of a maintained precision grip between the thumb and forefinger. The finger opposition forces were exerted against a strain gauge which allowed force changes to be studied under near isometric conditions. Task performance required the generation of a force ramp (the dynamic phase) and thereafter the maintenance of a stable force for one second (the static phase). Intracortical stimulation through the recording electrode was used to verify that the recordings were made from the appropriate somatotopographic area of the motor cortex. From a total of 221 recorded neurons, 76 were found to be either activated or deactivated during performance of the task. Among the 51 activated neurons, most discharged at higher frequencies during the dynamic phase, than during the static phase. The discharge of some of these neurons could be related to both force (F) and rate of force change (df/dt) whereas certain others could only be correlated with df/dt. The change in discharge frequency for these neurons generally occurred prior to the onset of EMG activity. Eight neurons were more active during maintained force than during the force ramp. The discharge frequency could not be correlated with df/dt and only one showed a significant positive relation to force. The change in discharge frequency for these neurons either coincided or occurred after the onset of EMG activity.

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé Une étude de la glande pinéale de la Taupe, animal vivant toujours dans une obscurité complète, a été entreprise selon la technique de fluorescence décrite par Falck et al. (1962). Une importante innervation catécholaminergique a été démontrée tandis que la fluorescence jaune — caractéristique des indoleamines-n'a pas été observée. Après omission du traitement par la formaldehyde, de très nombreuses cellules contenant du material autofluorescent (jaune-orange) furent observées. La nature et la fonction de ce material autofluorescent est discutée.
    Notes: Summary The pineal gland of the mole, a mammal which lives in permanent darkness, has been studied using fluorescence histochemistry. An extensive catecholaminergic innervation is demonstrated. A yellow formaldehyde-induced fluorescence, characteristic of indoleamines, was not observed. If formaldehyde vapour treatment was omitted in the procedure, numerous cells containing yellow-orange autofluorescent material could be shown. The nature and possible function of this material is discussed.
