    Peracute vibriosis in juvenile turbot Scophthalmus maximus (1977)

    Notes: An outbreak of an acute oedematous disease characterised by orbital and abdominal swelling, and high mortality, in young turbot, was studied. The clinical and pathological picture was consistent with a circulating toxaemia principally affecting the heart, orbit and kidney. Vibrio anguillarum, virtually identical with type strain NCMB6, was isolated in pure culture from all organs of all fish. Therapy was only marginally successful using antibiotics but in a small group subjected to temperature reduction below 10°C, losses were reduced from 20 % to 5 % compared with the controls.

    Notes: Abstract. Fungal infection of both wild and hatchery-reared sexually mature brown trout, Salmo trutta L., was caused by Saprolegnia diclina Humphrey Type 1. The major ions in the serum of infected fish were all significantly reduced in concentration and it is suggested that the primary cause of death was osmoregulatory breakdown resulting in a lethal haemodilution. Severe hypoproteinaemia and a significant reduction in the albumin/globulin ratio were reflected in the electro-phoretogram of the serum proteins from infected fish.

    Notes: Abstract. The histological features of the disease caused by infection of turbot by Herpesvirus scophthalmi are described. Infection of epidermal cells of skin and gill resulted in the formation of giant cells showing a variety of nuclear and cytoplasmic changes associated with the replication of the virus.     Notes: Abstract. Fungal infection of sexually mature brown trout and char was associated with a particular type of Saprolegnia exhibiting a low degree of homothallic sexuality. Hatchery-reared brown trout were more severely infected (in terms of the % area of the body covered with the fungus) than were wild fish. The fins of hatchery-reared fish were particularly prone to Saprolegnia infection regardless of sex. In wild brown trout, a sexual difference in the pattern of infection was demonstrated. The flanks of the male fish appeared to be more prone to infection when compared with the female and there was a greater susceptibility of the caudal and ventral fin of the female when compared with the male. Evidence is presented which suggests that the incidence of infection in mature male salmonid fish prior to spawning is significantly greater than in the females. This difference may not be apparent in spent fish after spawning. These findings are discussed in relation to the background concentration of fungal spores in the water, the behavioural characteristics of spawning fish and differences in epidermal structure.

    Notes: Abstract. Infection of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., in seawater with Exophiala salmonis is described. Histological effects consisted principally of granuloma formation, especially in the posterior kidney and spread appeared to occur both by extension and by the liaematogenous route. The nature of the outbreak suggested that the original infection occurred via contaminated food.A comparison is made between this condition and systemic mycoses in other species.

    Notes: Abstract. Pansteatitis is a nutritionally mediated condition associated with the feeding of certain types of fish oil or unsaturated fatty acids of fish origin in a diet poor in vitamin E. It occurs regularly in mink, cats, pigs and poultry, all of which are fed on high fish diets, but this is the first description of the condition from cultured fish. The main presenting signs in affected rainbow trout were swimming aberrations, discolouration and high mortality after minimal stress. Gross postmortem features were restricted to changes in the liver and swimbladder but, at the microscopic level, histopathological changes involving inflammatory cellular infiltration of lipid tissue in swimbladder, abdominal and peripancreatic fat and hypodermis, accompanied by myopathic changes, were regularly observed.

    Notes: Abstract. A detailed histopathological study of naturally occurring and experimentally induced outbreaks of nephrocalcinosis was carried out on rainbow trout from a number of farms.Histopathological effects were confined to the kidney, stomach and skeletal muscle. Lesions of the stomach wall were often found in the absence of renal lesions but muscle lesions were only found in the presence of severe renal damage. It was considered that the calcification was the result of deposition of calcium salts within necrotic tissue, and thus was dystrophic rather than metastatic. Variation between farms was considered to be due to variations in the effects of different aetiological factors in the complex series of physico-chemical events which appear to induce the condition.
