Notes: Bonding resins to enamel requires some form of mechanical attachment. Currently the dissolution of the outermost enamel layer is involved in etching with phosphoric acid. A new approach to mechanical bonding is described using a crystalline interface which itself bonds chemically to enamel. The crystals produced as good a bond strength as conventional acid etching. The crystals can be removed from the enamel with an ultrasonic or sickle-scaler followed by pumice prophylaxis. Many variations of the crystal growth principle may be visualized, including the development of fluoride-containing crystals.

Notes: Powdered, sterilized zinc polycarboxylate was implanted subcutaneously in 56 young hamsters and 54 mice, using equal numbers of each sex, with 24 sham operated hamsters and 26 mice as controls. The hamsters were sacrificed after 15 months and the mice after 12. Implant material was recovered from one of 42 surviving mice and from 16 of 43 surviving hamsters. Benign adenomas of the gut, thyroid, sebaceous glands and ovary were found in 3 experimental mice and in one control. Benign adrenal adenomas were found in 3 experimental hamsters and in one control. One control hamster developed a rhabdomyosarcoma in a limb. One experimental hamster developed a leiomyosarcoma in close relation to an implant.

Notes: A technique is outlined which use the electron microprobe to obtain X-ray absorption spectra, by photon absorption, in the long wavelength region. Spectra are presented for SiO, SiO2, rectorite, talc, vermiculite, V2O5, Cr2O3, Fe2O3, maghemite, Mylar and collodion. For all compounds the main absorption edge is near to 536 eV, which is significantly higher than core binding measured in ESCA studies. The transition metal oxides and organic films show a sharp absorption line near 531 eV in addition to the above edge. This absorption line is very close in energy to the anomalous peak observed in the oxygen K emission spectra when using KAP or other acid phthalate crystals and it seems likely that the two phenomena are associated.

Notes: Computer fitting techniques have been used to derive a new expression for the relationship between X-ray continuum intensity and atomic number for a range of electron acelerating potentials up to 25 kV, continuum energies up to 10 keV and average atomic numbers up to thirty. A practical approach to background corrections in energy dispersive electron microprobe analysis, which utilizes this expression, is outlined. The procedure should lead to significant improvements in both accuracy and detection limits in this method of X-ray analysis.

Notes: The paper gives an account of recent work at the Safety in Mines Research Establishment (SMRE) aimed at developing a test of high discrimination for examining the deflagration characteristics of permitted explosives that are designed to be very resistent to deflagration. Experience with an existing apparatus in which an explosive contained in a tube is subjected in the presence of coal dust to the detonation products from a charge of the same explosive is reviewed. More recently experiments have been made using an apparatus of the Audibert-Delmas type in which an igniter is used to initiate burning in a primer consisting of explosive mixed with coal dust, and the subsequent burning of the adjoining charge of explosive, which may be surrounded by a sheath of coal dust, is followed by measuring the temperature and pressure of the gases in the containing tube. Various possible test arrangements and criteria for assessing the propensity of an explosive to deflagrate are discussed.
