Description / Table of Contents:
Notes:
Summary Extension of scalp defects in surface area and depth indicate the appropriate method of closure. Immediate closure should be attempted, particularly if periosteum or bone is injured. The best method after burns is skin grafting on the periosteum or the bone directly after removal of the tabula externa when periosteum is lost. Any defect up to 6 cm can be closed easily by scalp rotation. Extensive defects need scalp flap shifts and transplantation. This procedure is illustrated with photographs of a 12-cm defect following radical extirpation of a basal-cell tumor involving bone and dura.
