Notes: Abstract Phenomenological field equations are proposed for studying rigid ferromagnets at temperatures close to the Curie temperature. These are discussed and compared with the equations of standard micromagnetics. Only a Gilbert's type of relaxation can be introduced.

Notes: Abstract In this paper we examine the influence of a general initial state of stress upon the propagation of infinitesimal (or weak) discontinuities in nonlinear relativistic elasticity. This influence, which materializes in alterations in the wave speeds, the general nonseparability in longitudinal and transverse waves, and the growth of the amplitude of infinitesimal discontinuities so as to form shock fronts, is first studied on the basis of a model of relativistic elasticity called hypoelasticity of zeroth order. The analytical treatment, however, is manageable only for the case of principal wave fronts for which the spatial direction of propagation coincides with a principal direction of the initial state of stress and, consequently, the wave fronts separate into longitudinal and transverse ones. Such notions as those of apparent elasticity moduli appear naturally in the analysis. Then a model of thermodynamical relativistic elasticity, referred to as neo-Hookean elasticity, is shown to be representable, insofar as wave-front propagation is concerned, by a special model of hypoelasticity of first order. The qualitative results obtained before concerning the influence of initial stresses are shown to apply equally to this description.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary An action principle is proposed for the theory of relativistic spinning fluids in which spin-spin interactions are accounted for, in a phenomenological way, by means of contact actions (couple stresses). The variations are performed in what is known as the Eulerian description in classical fluid dynamics (variation of the matter density and of the different velocity fields). So-called Clebsch representations are thus obtained for the spin precession velocity, the thermodynamical temperature, the index of the fluid, and the 4-current; the latter is not alined with the 4-velocity as a consequence of the presence of spin. Generalizations of Crocco-Vazsonyi equations, Helmholtz equations (for spinning fluids), and a theoremà la Bernoulli follow at once while the relativistic Euler equations as well as the four-dimensional conservation laws of energy-momentum and moment of energy-momentum are obtained after some calculations.

Notes: Summary The regulatory gene (argR) for the arginine biosynthetic pathway has been located at 106 min on the chromosome of S. typhimurium. In addition, the location of the gene specifying cytosine deaminase (cod) has been more precisely determined.

Notes: Abstract This essay aims at demonstrating the interest for a genuine continuum mechanics and, more restrictively, elasticity of general-relativistic systems in cases where the Einsteinian gravitational picture cannot be deleted, e.g., in “elastic” gravitational-wave detectors and in the study of elastic oscillations of solid stars. The same foundations, constitutive theory, and methodology (superimposition of perturbations on finite initial states) apply to both cases, which also demand a generalization to comprehend electrodynamical-mechanical couplings, electroelasticity in the first case (use of piezoelectricity), and magnetoelasticity in the second case (presence of extremely intense magnetic fields).

Notes: A method is described for roughening the surface of glass capillary columns for subsequent coating with polar stationary phases. A suspension of sodium chloride, obtained by addition of a saturated solution of sodium chloride in methanol to 1,1,1-trichloroethane, is passed through the column at velocities of 1-5 cm/s. During passage of the suspension, particles of sodium chloride deposit spontaneously on the column wall. The amount of sodium chloride deposited on the column wall is a function of the volume of the suspension passed through and of the contact time of the suspension and the column wall. Ultimately the amount of sodium chloride per unit surface area approaches a maximum. Columns covered with this maximum amount of sodium chloride were prepared with high reproducibility and coated with a number of polar stationary phases. Various factors that influence the stability of the suspension and the deposition of sodium chloride are discussed and minimum requirements are given. A theoretical model is proposed for the mechanism of deposition of sodium chloride particles on the glass wall.
