Notes: Abstract Parker's explanation of the sunspot phenomenon in terms of the enhanced emission of Alfvén waves (solar vulcanology) is shown to be compatible with observation only if ∼ 90% of the waves propagate downwards. Further difficulties arise if the region of cooling by Alfvén wave generation is restricted to a depth of 2 Mm. However, it is shown that, if Alfvén wave generation is included in a recent model proposed by Meyer, Schmidt, Weiss and Wilson, these difficulties may be resolved. The problem of the sharp umbra and penumbra boundaries is discussed and it is shown that features of this combined model are relevant to the flare phenomenon.

Notes: Abstract The configuration of a magnetic flux element in a static, compressible, gravitationally stratified plasma is considered. Under isothermal conditions an exact force-free solution is given for a two-dimensional cartesian flux sheath but for an axi-symmetric element, i.e. a flux tube, approximate solutions, applicable only to thin flux tubes, are obtained. When the isothermal condition is relaxed within the flux tube, non-force-free solutions are obtained exhibiting either a temperature excess or deficit on the axis of the flux tube. Using these solutions, the total potential energy of such a tube and its surroundings may be calculated. By comparing this with the total energy of an equivalent system ofn flux tubes the temperature excess or deficit in these tubes corresponding to the adiabatic subdivision of the single tube is determined. It is shown that under non-adiabatic conditions the subdivision process must be endothermic (i.e., external energy is required) if the temperature within the original tube is significantly less than its surroundings but exothermic if the temperatures are comparable. Thus it is conjectured that magnetic structures are less susceptible to subdivision if they are significantly cooler than their surroundings.

Notes: Summary A comparison was made between the specific activity of cathepsin D and a histologic score for inflammation on synovial tissue obtained from 36 patients undergoing total hip replacement and an excellent correlation was found between these parameters (correlation coefficient 0.82). In addition it was found that 5 patients with the clinical diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis had high cathepsin-specific activity (0.92±0.07) and high histologic scores (27.0±7.0). Patients with other diagnoses (failed prosthesis, idiopathic avascular necrosis, former resected hip) had low enzyme levels (0.44±0.23) as well as low histologic scores for inflammation (11.4±5.5). In cases with degenerative hip disease two groups could be definitively separated. Group 1 (20%) was characterized by high enzyme levels (0.89±0.19) and high histological scores (20.6±5.4). Group II (80%) was characterized by low enzyme levels (0.31±0.15) and low histologic scores (8.6±4.7) (Table 1).

Notes: Abstract “Lumpy Jaw” or “Kangaroo disease” is a common disease of macropods. It is distinct from Lumpy-jaw in cattle. Since Fox's original description in 1923 it now seems that there are at least two etiological agents, Nocardia species andBacteroides ruminicola varbrevis. These agents may act singly or synergistically. Laboratory methods are outlined to resolve this dilemma so that a rational approach to therapy may be determined.

Notes: Summary A method is described with which the extracellular space of isolated ventricular muscle can be measured accurately and continuously in the same muscle. The size of the extracellular space is shown to vary with the contractile state of the myocardium. Interventions such as quiescence, manganese and acidosis reduce myocardial contractility and increase the size of the extracellular space. Barium, ouabain and hypoxia cause contracture and reduce the size of the extracellular space. These changes should be taken into account when measuring intracellular electrolytes in isolated ventricular preparations.

Notes: Abstract An isothermal coarsening model was introduced for liquid inclusions in homogeneous aluminium-copper alloys. Discrepancies between experimentally measured and analytically predicted variations of the solid-liquid interface area per unit volume of liquid,Sv, the average inclusion diameter,¯D, and the number of inclusions per unit volume of solid,Nv, with isothermal coarsening time were attributed to experimental evaluation errors, to the inaccuracy of some assumptions made or values adopted for certain system variables and to the effect of melting and solidification kinetics. At constant fraction liquid, isothermal coarsening slows down with increasing copper concentration.
