Notes: The organic crystal 4-nitro-4'-methylbenzylidene aniline (NMBA) was identified as a promising nonlinear material by the powder technique. The material gave a second harmonic intensity 16 times that of urea. Large single crystals of dimensions 5×3×1 cm3 were grown by the temperature lowering of a seeded supersaturated ethyl acetate solution. The principal dielectric axes were defined by orthoscopic examination. The dispersions of the refractive indices were determined to an accuracy of ±0.0015 using the minimum deviation technique and Maker fringe spacings. These dispersion curves were fitted to a Sellmeier equation which allowed the indices to be determined to ±0.0006. The nonlinear d coefficients d11, d33, d31, and d13 were evaluated at 1000, 1064, and 1300 nm using the Maker fringe technique. The coefficient d11 was over 200 times larger than potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) d36. In addition, the nondiagonal coefficient d31 was similar to the phase-matching coefficient in the organic material 3-acetamido-4-dimethylamino-nitrobenzene (DAN). Critically phase-matched second harmonic signals were observed at all fundamental wavelengths. There was excellent agreement between the experimentally determined and theoretical phase-matched incidence angles. Noncritical phase-matched conditions have been calculated and are reported. Both angle and wavelength noncritical phase matching is possible with this crystal.

Notes: A study of the linear electro-optic effect in single crystals of the organic compound, 4-nitro–4'-methylbenzylidene aniline is reported. The reduced half-wave voltages have been found to have values 2.8, 1.3, and 1.1 kV at 632.8, 514.5, and 488.0 nm, respectively and the corresponding values of the largest linear electro-optic coefficient have been calculated. The thermal variation of the birefringence has also been investigated and the temperature variation of the refractive index difference is found to have the value, dΔn/dT = 15.8 × 10−5 K−1.

Notes: The relationship between deformation and dehydration has been investigated in Hercynian regionally metamorphosed rocks exposed on NW Sardinia. Two episodes of prograde mineral growth (M1 & M2) involving dehydration are recognized: growth of chlorite/phengite porphyroblasts at anchizone metamorphic conditions, contemporaneous with the first phase of deformation, D1, and growth of biotite from chlorite and phengite coincident with the second phase of deformation, D2. Deformation during both episodes of dehydration is characterized by penetrative axial planar foliations defined by well-developed phyllosilicate preferred orientations quantified by XRD textural goniometry, tight to isoclinal similar folds (interlimb angles 〈40°), and mineral-filled veins (hydrofractures) orientated parallel to axial planar foliations, that formed contemporaneously with the development of the penetrative foliations. No prograde mineral growth occurred during D2 at chlorite-zone conditions. D2 deformation in the absence of dehydration is characterized by non-penetrative crenulation cleavages, poorly developed phyllosilicate preferred orientations, relatively open (interlimb angles 〉40°), low-strain similar folds and minor brittle deformation. Systematic variations in macrofold interlimb angles, with respect to the timing of mineral growth, indicate that enhanced shortening (c. 80%) occurred during dehydration. Microfabrics show that the onset of dehydration is associated with the transition from a crenulation cleavage to a penetrative foliation. The presence of axial planar hydrofractures that formed coevally with dehydration and fabric development requires that supralithostatic fluid pressures and low differential stresses (〈c. 20 MPa) accompanied dehydration. These features demonstrate a connection between the timing of dehydration and the style of deformation.

Notes: A precise method is presented for measuring the refractive index of an anisotropic prism with light polarized orthogonal to the prism axis which is also a dielectric axis. Prisms have been cut from crystals of the optically nonlinear 4-amino benzophenone with exceptionally low defect concentration as identified by synchrotron white light topography. The linear refractive indices of these have been measured and fitted to four-parameter Sellmeier equations to an accuracy of 7×10−6–3×10−3. The values are accurately verified by observation of the external angle of incidence to a (001) plane required to meet the conditions of type-I phase matching with a fundamental wavelength of 1064 nm. The phase matching is of Hobden class six for this wavelength. In common with similar organic molecular materials, the molecular charge transfer axis defines the most polarizable direction in the crystal, with the C=O direction being much less significant. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The linear refractive indices of N-methyl urea have been measured and fitted to a three parameter Sellmeier equation with an accuracy of ±6×10−4–±2×10−4. The values are accurately verified by observation of the external angle of incidence to an (011) plane, required to observe type II phase matching with a fundamental wavelength of 871.6 nm. The phase matching is established as Hobden class nine for this wavelength. The refractive index values are consistent with the C=O direction being considered as the most polar axis. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A new hybrid structure for two-dimensional surface-emitting diode laser arrays has been demonstrated. Each hybrid array consists of linear arrays of GaAs/AlGaAs lasers, with conventional cleaved end facets, that are mounted in grooves etched in a Si substrate. The etched grooves have flat bottoms and 45° sidewalls that are coated with a highly reflecting Cr/Au layer. A hybrid array with three 4-mm-wide GaAs/AlGaAs linear laser arrays has been fabricated and tested. Approximately 10 W of peak power perpendicular to the array surface was obtained from each of the linear arrays for 11–12 A of pulsed current per array. The measured differential quantum efficiencies were 65–70%, indicating that the 45° metallized sidewalls deflect by 90° essentially all of the light emitted from the laser facets. The new approach allows for the use of integral Si heat sinks and should prove useful for fabricating large, high-power, two-dimensional laser arrays in any material system.
