    Notes: Abstract The aim of this paper is to present a modification to the Chui and Quak (1992) spline multiresolution analysis for the finite interval. Boundary scaling functions with multipole nodes at interval endpoints are rejected, in favor of the classical B-spline scaling function restricted to the interval. This necessitates derivation of revised boundary wavelets. In addition, a direct method of decomposition results in bandwidth reduction on solving some associated linear systems, and image distortion is reduced by employing natural spline projection. Finally, a hybrid projection scheme is proposed, which particularly for large systems further lowers operation count. Numerical experiments proving the algorithm are indicated.

    Notes: Abstract The objective of this research is development of front tracking methods that possess subgrid resolution capability. One envisions here continuous tracking of the front, as opposed to discrete (one grid point to the next) tracking, such as is provided by the random choice method. A front tracking scheme employing near-front cells which continuously evolve with time is developed. This scheme is applied to the problem of tracking a material interface in the underwater explosion problem.

    Notes: Abstract Use of the compactlyB-spline wavelet of Chui and Wang (1991); Chui (1992) is hindered by loss of accuracy on decomposition, through truncation of weight sequences which are countably infinite. Adaptations to finite intervals often encounter problems at boundaries. For multiresolution analysis on a finite interval employing the linearB-wavelet the present research provides a frontal approach to decomposition which avoids truncation of weight sequences, experiences no problems at boundaries, and which is exhibits a factor of three increase in computational efficiency. The boundary wavelets which complete the linearB-wavelet basis on a finite interval are constructed.

    Notes: A theorem expressing geometric conditions necessary and sufficient for the stiff stability of a linear multistep method is obtained. A corollary to this theorem provides sufficient conditions for stiff stability, for the class of algorithms characterized by a single essential root. By applying the Schur-Cohn criterion and employing a computerized algebraic manipulation program, the result provides a first step towards an exhaustive search technique for determining a continuum of members of this class.

    Notes: An iterative method for numerically solving the time independent Navier-Stokes equations for viscous compressible flows is presented. The method is based upon partial application of the Gauss-Seidel principle in block form to the systems of the non-linear algebraic equations which arise in construction of finite element (Galerkin) models approximating solutions of fluid dynamic problems. The C0-cubic element on triangles is employed for function approximation. Computational results for a free shear flow at Re = 1000 indicate significant achievement of economy in iterative convergence rate over finite element and finite difference models which employ the customary time dependent equations and symptotic time marching procedure to steady solution. Numerical results are in excellent agreement with those obtained for the same test problem employing time marching finite element and finite difference solution techniques.

    Notes: The finite element method is employed for the calculation in Cartesian co-ordinates of uniform flow on a rectangular region which encounters an embedded oblique shock with known turning angle.     Notes: An efficient strategy is outlined for out-of-core solution of the large systems of equations which specify nodal point time derivatives in finite element models of transient flow problems. The positive definiteness, symmetry, and band structure of the finite element mass matrices, as well as the nature of the equation assemblage process, is exploited by the method.     Notes: Operator splitting for evolution equations which involve linear operators is investigated. A systematic method for identifying multifactor fractional-step operator splittings is proposed. The classical second-order accurate splittings of Strang readily emerge, as well as various third-order splittings of nonstandard type. Factorizations possessing mixed positive-negative fractional steps are discovered, as well as bizarre splittings whose factors include complex fractional steps. It is found that no higher-order accurate splitting which employs all positive fractional steps and which possesses less than nine operator factors can exist. For the linear case this implies second-order accurate splittings are optimal, as a further increase of one power in accuracy essentially requires a three-fold increase in work. This estimate slightly improves, for cases where the nonstandard splittings can be employed. Some numerical experiments which illustrate the theory are provided.

    Notes: The premature separation of saboted projectiles undergoing high-mach-number in-bore acceleration is investigated. Results from a simplified numerical model for the problem are presented. Measured short-term velocity history for a typical projectile is used to describe the motion of a nonuniformly accelerating piston. Two numerical algorithms for calculating the shocked flow in tront of the accelerating piston are presented. Mach number and pressure time histories for the flow afford corrective input to the sabot design process. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
