Notes: In the Cambridge renal transplant unit percutaneous needle biopsies of renal transplants have been extensively used to help identify the cause of impaired allograft function. During the period 1966–1973, 154 of the 269 renal allografts transplanted were biopsied at least once during the first 90 days after transplantation. In this survey the relationship between morphological changes in these biopsy specimens and allograft function I, 3 and 5 years after transplantation is assessed. A highly significant direct relationship exists between early graft failure and the presence of medial necrosis of arteries, acute glomerular lesions and interstitial haemorrhage. Less than 10% of grafts with one or more of these changes and none in which all three types of lesion were present were capable of supporting life at I year. There is a significant association between poor subsequent graft function and mononuclear cell infiltration of the intima of arteries. No clear relationship exists, however, between the function of grafts at 1 and 3 years and the degree of mononuclear cell infiltration of the interstitial tissue. Tubular necrosis was frequently observed and future graft performance is related to the extent and cause of the tubular damage.

Notes: Summary Spirillum bengal is unable to grow on sugars, but can utilize different organic acids as carbon sources. Dehydrogenase activities were tested with different substrates and were found highest with lactate, glutamate, acetate, succinate and malate. A low aldolase activity was also detectable.

Notes: Summary A partially purified preparation of a water-soluble, heat-resistant, nonspecific exotoxin produced by a strain ofMacrophomina phaseolina, isolated fromPhaseolus mungo L. could reduce Cu++ ions and produced a red colour with 2,4-dinitrophenyl hydrazine reagent. It caused inhibition of seed germination, wilting of cut seedlings, stunted growth of young seedlings and loss of permeability of the cell membrane. Seedlings ofP. mungo, grown in presence of the toxin showed a slight increase in the contents of protein and total RNA over control, but a significant increase in the specific activities of F-1, 6-BP aldolase and G-6-P isomerase.

Notes: Abstract Effects of undecanoic acid (UDA) on germination of microconidia and elongation of germ tubes in UDA sensitive (uda s) wild type Trichophyton rubrum and UDA resistant (uda r) mutant derived from it, were studied. UDA inhibited conidial germination of uda s and uda r strains at 30 μg/ml and 120 μg/ml respectively which were minimum inhibitory concentrations of UDA for these two strains. When spores from both uda s and uda r were germinated in presence of subinhibitory concentration of UDA, germ tube growth was short. The elongation of germ tubes of spores pregerminated in absence of UDA was also inhibited by dose of UDA not sufficient to inhibit germination.

Notes: Summary The effect of longitudinal surface curvature on steady two-dimensional incompressible laminar boundary layer of a micropolar fluid has been considered. Van Dyke's first oder perturbation analysis is applied to the full equations of motion derived in curvilinear coordinate system which facilitates to carry out boundary layer approximation for flow past a curved surface. This results into two systems of partial differential equations which are called the zeroth order and the first order boundary layer equations. The zeroth order equations are the usual boundary layer equations for a micropolar fluid. The first order equations take into account the longitudinal surface curvature effect explicitly. Similar solution of the governing equations exists if (i) the inviscid flow velocity on the surface varies linearly along the surface and (ii) the longitudinal surface curvature is constant. Numerical results are presented illustrating the dependence of the important flow quantities of both zeroth order and first order boundary layers on the micropolar fluid parameters. The results have been compared with the corresponding results for a Newtonian fluid. It has been found that the skin friction decreases and the wall couple stress increases for convex side of the surface and vice versa for the concave side.
