    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé Les mandibules des ouvriers du troisième âge (O3) et des nymphes du quatrième àge (N4) deDrepanotermes perniger, tous les deux du cinquième stade, diffèrent les unes des autres en taille et en forme. Les caractères mandibulaires ne sont d'aucune valeur discriminante si on les considère séparément, mais une variable canonique, basée seulement sur trois ou quatre caractères de l'une ou l'autre mandibule analysée individuellement ou, dans les cas d'une analyse combinée des deux mandibules, basée sur six caractères, permet de différencier complètement les deux castes. On obtient des résultats analogues (avec O3 et N4) sur des populations deDrepanotermes perniger d'autres origines, éloignées jusqu'à 3,500 km de la série de référence pour laquelle on a déterminé la variable canonique. Ce type d'analyse serait peut-être applicable aux études du polyéthisme des termites, et de la spécialisation fonctionnelle des associations sympatriques d'espèces apparentées.
    Notes: Summary The mandibles of third-stage workers and fourth-stage reproductive nymphs ofDrepanotermes perniger, both of the fifth instar, differ in size and shape. Measurements are of no diagnostic value taken singly, but scores from a canonical variate based on as few as three or four measurements of either mandible analysed individually, or a total of six measurements for a combined analysis based on both mandibles, effect complete separation of the two castes. Similar separation is achieved with W3 and N4 from populations ofD. perniger collected up to approximately 3,500 km from the source of the reference series from which the canonical variate was calculated. Such multivariate analyses may be helpful in studies of polyethism in termites, and of structural and functional specialisation in sympatric associations of closely related species.

    Notes: Abstract Growth in the laboratory of early juvenile Panulirus longipes cygnus George from the last larval (puerulus) stage to approximately 3 years of age is described. Specimens were held either in isolation or in groups of 3 or 5 rock lobsters per tank, at constant temperatures of 20° or 23°C (both ± 0.5 C°) or at the temperatures of the incoming seawater, which ranged annually between 14.9° and 25.9°C. Metamorphosis from the planktonic puerulus to the settled juvenile existence involved a reduction in size and usually took about two moults to complete. By this time the sexes could be distinguished. Growth in aquaria from the 2nd moult after puerulus until the juveniles were approximately 3 years of age was adequately described by exponential (von Bertalanffy) functions, with the growth curves gradually tapering off after the rock lobsters had reached 40 to 42 mm carapace length. Young juveniles were not gregarious until 20 to 25 mm carapace length (approximately 1.5 years old), however, growth rates were not depressed in individuals held in isolation up to approximately 3 years of age. Temperature markedly affected growth; the fastest observed growth up to 450 days was at 23°C. Variations in temperature resulted in decreased growth rates in “winter” and the reverse in “summer” in individuals at ambient temperatures. There was an increase in the moult increment at successive moults corresponding to increased carapace length, but increased growth rates were achieved through shortening the intermoult duration. The period of development from the puerulus stage until approximately 1.5 years of age is a distinct phase of development both of behaviour and growth.

    Notes: Summary The distribution of chloride in the leaf and salt gland ofTamarix aphylla (L.) Karst was investigated electron microscopically using the silver precipitation technique for chloride. Identification of the electron dense deposits as AgCl was done by electron diffraction. Significant increases of AgCl deposition occurred in the leaf apoplast, the plasmodesmata of the transfusion zone, and the sub-cuticular spaces of the salt glands of salt-treated, secreting material as compared to distilled-water-treated, non-secreting material. These results suggest that the apoplast serves as a shunt from the xylem to the salt gland under conditions of high salinity. The accumulation of chloride in the sub-cuticular space of the glands indicates that this region is a collecting chamber for salts and this is discussed in relation to secretion.
