Notes: Abstract Radiocolloid liver scintigraphy for the detection of liver metastases is widely used. Because of the known limitations of this technique we investigated the correlation between liver scintigraphy and serum CEA levels in patients with a confirmed diagnosis of primary rectum carcinoma. The serum CEA level is not suitable as a screening test for cancer, but it can be helpful as an extra parameter for the detection of liver metastases. The correlation between liver scintigraphy, the serum CEA level and the clinical findings has also been studied. A good correlation between liver scintigraphy and the serum CEA level was found. Serum CEA levels can be helpful in facilitating the evaluation of liver scintigraphy in patients with carcinoma of the rectum.

Notes: Abstract In a series of patients suspected for deep vein thrombosis a comparison was made between phlebography, radioisotope venography with the aid of 99mTc labeled macroaggregates, and 99mTc Urokinase scintigraphy. A good degree of correlation was found between all three techniques, although 99mTc Urokinase tended to localize somewhat aspecifically in the vessels around the thrombosis. It was concluded that the technique of choice was radioisotope venography using 99mTc macroaggregates (RIV). With this technique both the circulating disturbances and the precise localisation of thrombi (as hot spots) could be demonstrated, thus providing the information to be obtained from phlebography and Urokinase scintigraphy in one simple study. An additional advantage of radioisotope venography (RIV) is that a lung scintigram can also be made. A significant number of patients with signs of deep vein thrombosis also showed positive lung scintigrams.

Notes: Abstract A comparison between 99mTc-polyphosphate and pyrophosphate for the early detection of skeletal metastases demonstrated a significant difference between them. Of 71 lesions visualized by polyphosphate scintigrams only 54 were to be found on pyrophosphate scintigrams. The lesions not visualized by pyrophosphate were associated with bone with a high bone-marrow content. It has been suggested that polyphosphate should be the reagent of choice for the detection of skeletal malignancy. In a retrospective study of 118 patients the diagnostic reliability of positive polyphosphate scintigrams was found to be in excess of 90% in patients where skeletal associated pain was the only indication of metastasis.
