Notes: Excised S24 perennial ryegrass leaves were dried in controlled and measured conditions of temperature (28°C), relative humidity (22%) and airspeed (40 cm s−1), without treatment or after treatment with petroleum ether (4O–60°C boiling point) applied in various ways. Subsequent increase in the drying rate of the leaves varied greatly with method of application of petroleum ether, and the results indicate that the modification of the waxes on the leaf surfaces, which results in reduced cuticular resistance to water loss, requires the presence of liquid petroleum ether on the leaf surface. This effect increases with temperature, and the increase is due to the enhanced activity of the petroleum ether in dissolving waxes, rather than to direct thermal effect on tissue resistance. The practical implications of employing such a technique are discussed.

Notes: [Auszug] UNTIL very recently, scant attention had been paid to the problem of reviewing the vast field of prostaglandin synthesis. This timely book by Professors Szantay and Novak is the second independent work entitled Synthesis of Prostaglandins to appear in recent months (see Nature, 23 February, 271, ...

Notes: [Auszug] THE field of prostaglandin (PG) synthesis has received the attention of many organic chemists over the past decade, and as a result much novel and intriguing chemistry has been developed. Abhijit Mitra has set out to bring together, in this single review, the various synthetic strategies that have ...

Notes: [Auszug] Two stereoisomers of BP 7,8-dihydrodiol-9, 10-oxide (BPDE) have been synthesised. In isomer I, the 7-hydroxyl and 9,10-oxide groups are on the opposite sides of the plane of the ring system while in isomer II they are on the same side. Each stereoisomer has two enantiomers which have also been ...

Notes: Abstract Transport by stream water of insecticides and nutrients in Big Creek, Norfolk County, Ontario, Canada, was examined by combining concentrations of substrates with flow data. Big Creek has its headwaters in dairy cattle country, its central basin area is mainly devoted to tobacco growing, and its lower reaches contain mixed fanning, corn and vegetables, etc., before it flows into Lake Erie. Three sampling sites were chosen to represent these 3 different land uses. Generally concentrations of substrates in the water were quite uniform at the 3 sites resulting in transport of quantities in proportion to stream flow. Certain anomalies occurred and are discussed. The 2 chief insecticides found were DDT and dieldrin. Analyses for potassium, calcium and magnesium indicated that these nutrient losses into the stream were arearather than usage-dependent. Midseason variations in loss of nitrogen and phosphorus may be the result of agricultural practices in the three areas represented in this study. The largest quantities of all nutrients lost occurred early in the season before crops were established.

Notes: Summary Tri (n-butyl) phosphate (TNBP)-split vaccine containing 6400 CCA units of influenza virus A/Aichi/68 (H3N2) was given intramuscularly to a group of volunteers. The changes in serum haemagglutination-inhibiting (HI) and nasal wash neutralizing antibody were measured, and the results compared with that of volunteers given a TNBP-split vaccine containing 400 CCA of the same virus. More volunteers given the high-dose vaccine developed a fourfold rise in serum HI antibody, and there was a greater increase in geometric mean titre in this group. In addition, more volunteers given the high-dose vaccine developed detectable nasal wash neutralizing and anti-neuraminidase antibodies. Following low-dose vaccine, the production of nasal wash antibody was not related to the serum antibody response. For both groups given vaccine, antibody was detected most frequently in nasal washings with relatively high levels of protein and IgA; the concentration of IgA was also directly related to the protein concentration.
