Notes: A dynamic and a static method of assessing the comfortable zone by means of a screw jack were compared in 12 subjects. Recorded under dynamic conditions the average width of the comfortable zone was approximately 3·0 mm, and under static conditions approximately 5·0 mm (P 〈 0·0001). It is suggested that in the dynamic experiments the larger output from receptors in the chewing system was responsible for the narrower zone, i.e. the more precise assessments of the comfortable zone.

Notes: A new pattern of screwjack for assessing the vertical dimension for occulusion utilizing an edentulous patient's proprioceptive sensation is described. It provides a greater range of movement than other, giving infinitely variable heights between 9 and 21 mm. The elements being captive, it cannot come to pieces in use.Laboratory experiments were contrived to define the magnitude of reading errors and the play in the screw threads. It was found that, only in instances where a graduation related closely to the datum mark, did errors of interpretation arise. These were found to exceed the height set for test purposes by 0·1 mm consistently. An error of this order is of no practical significance clinically and is no impediment to such an application of the device. Mean play in the new pattern jacks was 0·01 mm compared to 0·05 mm in the Timmer versions. In a clinical experiment the performance of the screw was compared to that of Timmer. Statistical evidence was found which suggested a functional difference between the two, the new pattern being significantly more accurate.

Notes: In a previous study it was found that the distance between the borders of the comfortable zone was considerably wider when the zone was recorded statically rather than dynamically. However, it was not reported how condylar displacements may be related to the zonal borders. Therefore, an attempt is made in the present study to translate zonal border recordings into the equivalent amount of condylar rotation. Using a dental articulator, it was found that the condyles rotated 4.96°, when the comfortable zone was recorded statically, and 2.50°, when the zone was recorded dynamically. The difference, 2.46°, was statistically significant (P 〈 0.001).

Notes: Summary A case of idiopathic parkinsonism showed specific neuropathological findings, namely, the diffuse appearnces of intracytoplasmic inclusions of Lewytype in the cerebral cortex in addition to many Lewy bodies in the pigmented brain stem nuclei. The staining properties and the ultrastructure of the inclusions in the cerebral cortex had a strong resemblance to those of the Lewy bodies in the substantia nigra, though a few electron microscopical differences were observed. Almost all of these ‘cortical inclusions’ were homogeneous or had an obscure core in their center, and they gave the impression of immature Lewy bodies.

Notes: Abstract All seventeen black rats collected from Mauritius Island were characterized by having many extra small acrocentric autosomes. Their basic karyotype was of Oceanian type, because of the presence of the large metacentric M1 and M2 pairs, but chromosome numbers in 13 specimens among them were 42, those of 3 specimens 43, and those of the remaining one specimen 44. Although the Oceanian type rat had 2 small acrocentric autosomes (pair no. 13), 16 Mauritius rats had 10 small acrocentrics, and the remaining one had 8 small acrocentrics. Comparative karyotype analysis between Oceanian and Mauritius type rats showed that the extra small acrocentrics found in Mauritius rats were due to Robertsonian fission of small metacentric pairs no. 14 and 18 of the original Oceanian type rat. Only one rat with 8 small acrocentrics showed the heteromorphic pair no. 18 consisting of one metacentric and two acrocentrics. The large metacentric M1 chromosome in 13 of 17 rats examined showed homologous pair, but two of them were heteromorphic by involving one metacentric M1 and two acrocentrics. In the remaining two rats M1 chromosome was not observed, but acrocentric pairs no. 4 and 7 were included. These acrocentrics were also suggested to be originated from Robertsonian fission of the large metacentric M1 chromosome. Robertsonian fission seemed to be one of the important mechanism found in karyotype evolution.

Notes: Abstract In vivo sister chromatid exchange (SCE) in mouse cells derived from various organs was studied by infusing BrdU from the tail vein. It was found that at BrdU concentrations ranging from 2.2–13.5 μg/g/h, the SCE frequency in bone marrow cells seemed to stay at a constant level (1.5–2/cell/two cell cycles) whereas it started to rise as the BrdU dose exceeded this dose range. When BrdU within this dose range was infused continuously from the tail vein for appropriate hours to label chromosomes in various organs, the average SCE frequencies per cell were found to be 1.64 in bone marrow cells, 1.82 in spermatogonia, 1.99 in splenic cells, 2.89 in intestinal cells and 3.69 in cells from adjuvant stimulated lymph nodes. It is suggested that the spontaneous level of the in vivo SCE frequency might be about 1.5–2/cell/two cell cycles in the mouse. In cells derived from intestine and adjuvant stimulated lymph node, some unknown factors might work as a inducer of SCEs resulting in a significant increase in the SCE frequency in these organs.
