Notes: Abstract The relaxation of holes inp-Ge excited by CO2 laser radiation is analyzed in a detailed cascade model. The scattering times are taken in part from theory and from recent saturation-spectroscopic measurements. From this model we calculate the photoconductive response quantitatively. Experimentally we observe the conductivity change induced by single ns CO2 laser pulses and find good agreement with the predictions.

Notes: Abstract This paper describes the experimental verification of a laser-induced double-dip resonance predicted theoretically for two-wave saturation spectroscopy. Fine structure in the form of a central dip with a width (FWHM) near 20 cm−1 is found in the broad hole-burning feature induced by 942 cm−1 wavelength radiation inp-type germanium. The central dip is ascribed to Bragg scattering caused by, and thus measuring the decay of, the excited-state population grating set up by interference of the saturating and the probing waves. From the composite spectrum, therefore, apopulation difference lifetimeT 1=0.6 ps can be directly obtained as the inverse width of the central dip. Likewise the broad background feature yields the homogeneous ordipole lifetimeT 2=0.1 ps.

Notes: New techniques in laser Raman spectroscopy are used to obtain spectra of aqueous solutions of lysozylme for frequency shifts as small as 5 cm-1. In addition, Raman measurements are made on two crystalline forms of hen egg white lysozyme. The spectra obtained from the solution and from the crystal are found to be similar for frequencies above 100 cm-1. However, a low-frequency band at 25 cm-1 observed in crystalline lysozyme is not found in the solution, indicating that this band cannot be attributed to an internal molecular vibration.
