Notes: Two univariate peak-to-peak measures of electroencephalic average evoked response (AER) were compared with two multivariate measures of AER with respect to: (1) ability to discriminate between stimuli of different intensity; and 2) test-retest reliability. AER data from 47 sleeping newborns for each of 2 test sessions were utilized to calculate P2-N2 amplitude,tp2-n2 (the test statistic which measures the degree to which the P2-N2 amplitude differed from zero), F1 (a multivariate measure of the degree to which changes in potential differed from zero), and Fjk (a multivariate measure of degree to which changes in potential differed from changes in potential in background EEG).The multivariate measures were somewhat superior to the univariate measures in the ability to discriminate three stimulus intensities when used as the dependent measure of AER in 47 subjects, though differences between measures were small. At the same time the multivariate measures were somewhat inferior to the univariate measures in retest reliability. There were major discrepancies between the multivariate and univariate measures of AER for some individuals.Comparison of the two multivariate measures indicates that in these data from sleeping new-borns, use of background EEG as a baseline reference for the multivariate measure. Fjk, decreased its reliability without enhancing its ability to distinguish stimulus intensities.

Notes: Heart rate level and phasic responses to auditory stimuli were recorded in a total of 39 newborn offspring with one schizophrenic parent and compared to those of 82 newborns with no family history of a schizophrenic disorder as well as to those of 48 newborns with a possible family history of A schizophrenic disorder. Newborns were tested for 31/2 hrs on the second and, again, on the third postnatal day, and the data were analyzed in relation to a number of prenatal variables. Results indicated a significant interaction between diagnostic group and the level of maternal delivery medication for the change in heart rate level during the second, but not the third, postnatal day. The possible validity of this finding is discussed, and reasons for the failure to obtain more definitive heart rate differences between these groups of newborns are considered.

Notes: In ten patients with extrinsic bronchial asthma, allergen provoked bronchospasm was significantly inhibited by the alpha receptor blocking drug thymoxamine given intravenously. In two of these patients thymoxamine by inhalation also effectively inhibited allergen induced broncboconsiriction. It is suggested that thymoxamine may be acting either by increasing intracellular levels of cyclic AMP and thus inhibiting mediator release following allergen challenge or by modifying the airways response to these mediators by altering the bronchomotor tone. The variable responses recorded after allergen challenge in presence of alpha blockade with thymoxamine suggests that the dominant effect is on the bronchomotor tone rather than the mediator release.

Notes: Nineteen patients with hay fever symptoms received nine weekly injections of a pyridine-extracted alum-precipitated grass pollen vaccine (Alavac P). The results were compared with a group of twenty patients who received a three injection series of a glutaraldehyde-modified pollen–tyrosine vaccine (Pollinex). In both groups 65% had a subjective improvement in their symptoms and no significant difference in symptom scores was obtained throughout the pollen season. In the Pollinex group a lower incidence of systemic side effects was recorded.

Notes: A double-blind trial of the topically active corticosteroid, betamethasone valerate in aerosol form, in the control of chronic asthma is reported. The results show that this is an extremely effective therapeutic agent in non-steroid dependent but nonetheless moderately severe asthmatics. Patients were well controlled on 800 μg of betamethasone valerate daily and control was maintained over a 12-month period. This form of treatment has few undesirable side effects but there is probably an increased incidence of oropharyngeal and laryngeal candidiasis. In particular, adrenocortical suppression was not noted.

Notes: Summary Three groups of four splenectomised calves, three months old, were infected with Babesia argentina parasites. One group was inoculated intravenously with 2000 kallikrein inhibitor units (kiu)/kg body weight of the broad-spectrum proteinase inhibitor, Trasylol®, three times a day for 5 days commencing on the 3rd day after infection (early treatment). The same dose of Trasylol was given to a second group for 3 days commencing 8 days after infection (late treatment). The third group was untreated. Parasite multiplication rates were similar in the three groups. In the early treated group levels of activated kallikrein in plasma were significantly lower than those in the other two groups. The early treatment group also showed significantly higher levels of plasma kallikrein inhibitor. No significant differences in total plasma kallikrein levels were seen among the three groups. Packed cell volumes in the treated groups remained significantly higher than those in the controls. The implications of these findings are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Seasonal fluctuations in populations of the introduced speciesTeleonemia scrupulosa Stål and damage by this insect to common taxa ofLantana camara, were observed at several field sites and experimental plots. At 2 plots effects ofT. scrupulosa populations on untreated plants were compared with plants protected by application of insecticides. On untreated plants damage varied seasonally and between taxa ofL. camara. In general attack byT. scrupulosa reduced fruiting and caused severe short term foliage damage. Combined with severe stress from some other cause heavy attack may result in long term damage or death to plants. However Common PinkL. camara was more resistant to damage than were the other taxa studied. At the time of these experiments other insect species were at very low population levels and did not have observable effects onL. camara.

Notes: The reactions have been studied by a mass-balance method involving the photolysis of small amounts of biacetyl in the presence of a large excess of isobutane containing a small proportion of the unsaturated substrate. The following Arrhenius parameters have been derived: TextTemperatureElog ArangeReaction(kcal/mol)(1./mol·sec)(°K)ĊH3 + C2H4 → Ċ3H77.3 ± 1.08.32 ± 0.5350 - 500ĊH3 + C2H2 → Ċ3H57.7 ± 1.58.79 ± 0.8379 - 487ĊH3 + C6H6 → C7H97.6 ± 1.08.79 ± 0.5372 - 484The results for methyl addition to ethylene are based on previous determinations by other techniques as well as the present studies. The results for methyl addition to acetylene and benzene are derived solely from the present experiments and are calculated relative to a rate constant of log k2(l./mol·sec) = 7.42 - (7.1/θ) for the reference reaction (2), ·H3 + (CH3)3CH → CH4 + ·4H9.
