Abstract In studying the Markov properties of retinal ganglion cell spike trains under various square-wave stimuli, the interspike times were classified into two groups, short and long. Those resulting 0–1 processes which were stationary were tested for Markov dependence in the usual way. Of the fourteen cases examined, four of those corresponding to more intense illumination turned out to have first order dependence, while one other had fourth order dependence.
