Notes: Abstract Cadmium sorption experiments were performed using four soil separates of different chemical and mineralogical composition, adding Cd solutions with initial concentrations ranging from 15 to 150 μg l−1. At the soils pHs, the sorption isotherms were a mixture of a constant partition isotherm with a high affinity one. Also, more than 90% of the initially added Cd was sorbed by all four soils. These results indicate a high affinity of these soils for trace amounts of Cd. The effect of pH was, in general, to decrease the amount of sorbed Cd as the pH decreased. The sorption isotherms were linear at all pH's. Also, the data fitted the Freundlich's sorption isotherm in all cases, but not Langmuir's. Freundlich's k values were found to be a good index of the relative Cd sorption affinities of the four soils at all the pH's used. It was found that the structural and chemical nature of the soils sorbent complex was a more important parameter than the CEC when studying the sorption of these trace amounts of Cd by soils.

Notes: Abstract The leachability of B and salts from two fly ash-amended soils was conducted in a column leaching experiment. Fly ash was applied to the surface 3 cm of a Baywood (acid) sand and an Arizo (calcareous) sandy, loam at 5% by weight; the columns were continously leached with Colorado River water at two different pH's. Boron from fly ash was solubilized more readily in the Baywood than in the Arizo soil. Addition of fly ash increased B levels in the leachates from 0.25 to 2.35 μg ml−1 (Baywood) and 0.93 μg ml−1 (Arizo). Acidified leaching water had no significant effect on B leaching patterns but resulted in leaching higher soluble salts. Approximately 348 and 161 cm of water for the Arizo and the Baywood soils respectively, would be required to reduce the B concentration below a critical limit for B sensitive crops. It is suggested that crops planted when fly ash is applied for disposal/recycling on land should be both salt and B tolerant.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary An emission spectrographic method has been developed for the estimation of 22 metallic impurities in plutonium dioxide using carrier-distillation technique Silver chloride at 5% concentration in a charge of 100 mg has been used as the carrier. Mixed oxide standards containing 10% PuO2 have been used for the analysis of matching composition of plutonium samples. Precision and accuracy determinations of the synthetic samples indicate 7–16% deviation for most of the elements. The work described includes analysis of reference samples and matrix effect studies. The method is suitable for the chemical quality control analysis of plutonium oxide to be used for Fast Breeder Test Reactor (FBTR) fuel.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary An atomic absorption spectrometric method has been developed for the determination of chromium, cobalt, copper, manganese and nickel in U3O8 by electrothermal atomization of 5 mg powder samples. Nanogram amounts of all the elements can be estimated with a precision ranging between 7–12%. The non-specific absorption due to U3O8 for these measurements is negligible. The use of graphite powder with U3O8 in equal or double the sample amount improves sensitivity for the analyte element and prolongs the life of the atomizer.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Detailed investigations have been carried out to find a suitable alternative to the AgCl carrier for the estimation of a wide range of trace metallic elements including silver in uranium. These studies also include determination of arc-plasma parameters for different carriers. Based on the results of these studies, a 6 % mixture of Ga2O3 and SrF2 in 2∶1 proportion has been found to be the best carrier. A “carrier distillation” emission spectrographic method has been standardised for estimation of twenty-three elements in uranium with 50 mg charge on the electrode using this carrier. The precision of the method is 18% or better for most of the elements.
