Notes: The chemical composition of tank and pond reared and wild young grey mullet, Mugil cephalus L., ranging in length from 15 to 75 mm was studied. Tank reared mullet had a higher percentage of protein, carbohydrate, total lipid and a lower moisture content than wild fish. These differences are attributed to the artificial diet, available in excess, as well as the relatively inactive life in the confined spaces of the rearing tanks. M. cephalus in general has a high percentage of total lipid and therefore, can be classified as a ‘fatty’ fish. The highest level of protein in tank reared fish was found in those kept at a salinity of 20‰. Fish reared on an excess diet in fresh water tended to show a close similarity to wild fish in trends of change of chemical constituents with growth.

Notes: Abstract The effect of body size and salinity on the rate of digestion of young grey mullet, Mugil cephalus L., was studied using the “sacrifice” method. The rate of digestion was found to be salinity-dependent, being slower at lower salinities than at higher salinities. This is correlated to higher food intake at the lower salinities. Rate of digestion was also found to be dependent on body size, increasing with increasing body weight.

Notes: Abstract The leaf-mining hispidPromecotheca cumingi Baly, was first recorded as a pest on coconut in Sri lanka in October 1970. Its possible mode of entry and spread from the point of first occurrence are discussed. An account is given of the life-cycle, rate of multiplication, host plants and damage under Sri Lanka conditions. The spectacular success achieved in controlling the pest, which was spread over about 8,000 hectares, using the biological method, the techniques adopted for breeding and release of exotic parasites and the follow-up surveys to ascertain activity of the introduced parasites are discussed in detail. A brief account of the cost/benefit analysis is also given.

Notes: Abstract Eriborus trochanteratus Morley, is a larval parasite ofNephantis serinopa Meyr. in Sri Lanka. The life-cycle and habits of the parasite are described and a detailed description is given of a technique evolved for the laboratory mass-breeding ofEriborus on an alternative host viz.Corcyra cephalonica Staint. Its effectiveness in the field and its natural enemies in Sri Lanka are also briefly discussed.
