Notes: Abstract We definen-ary (n ≥ 1) operations compelled by an operator and operations of degreep, generalizations of Greibach's binary syntactic operations. We show that properties of binary syntactic operators remain right forn-ary operations (n ≥ 1) and further for idempotent operations. We obtain so hierarchy theorems among full semiAFLs and new properties about classical operations and classical families of languages. The new definitions and properties are illustrated by study of a family ofn-ary operations.

Notes: Summary A study has been conducted to establish the validity of a Spanish version of Goldberg's G. H. Q. in its 60-item final form. This screening instrument was tested on a sample of 200 patients who attended four general out-patient clinics. One hundred and nine of the patients were interviewed by various psychiatrists using the Standardized Psychiatric Interview. The correlation obtained between the questionnaire scores and clinical judgement of the severity of psychiatric disturbance was 0.81. The specificity of the questionnaire was found to be 88%, and its sensitivity 81%. These results confirm the validity of the G. H. Q. in its Spanish version and open the door to future comparative studies among English and Spanish speaking populations.

Notes: The protein collagen is a major constituent of mammalian tissue. Treatment of calfskin with an enzyme under acid conditions simultaneously solubilizes much of the collagen and removes non-helical telopeptides which are believed to contribute to immune response. Then, the solid collagen can be reconstituted by precipitating the solubilized material with weak alkali. Films from the enzyme-treated, acid-soluble collagen are strengthened by cross-linking with glutaraldehyde. Composite films are made by coprecipitating collagen (from a solution) with an acrylic resin (from a latex). In one example, an acrylic resin to collagen ratio of 1:3 gives a wet-tensile strength about 30 percent higher than that for collagen alone. The tensile strength range of these wetted films (20 to 30 megapascals) is typical of the upper range for such limp films as polyethylene. On the other hand, ‘bone-dry’ collagen has a higher strength similar to that of glassy polymers such as polystyrene.

Notes: Drag reduction in the turbulent flow of aqueous solutions of polyacrylamide and poly(ethylene oxide) was studied in tubes and parallel plates. Friction factors were determined at Reynolds numbers up to 20,000 for polymer concentrations of 0.10 to 400g/m3 in glass tubes run in a constant-head, gravity flow system in which the velocity was determined from the horizontal distance traveled by the effluent stream while falling a set vertical distance; and in Plexiglas parallel plates run in a constant-velocity, machine-driven system in which the pressure drop between two points on the plates was measured with a differential pressure transducer. A general method of correlating fraction laminarization or drag reduction effectiveness with polymer concentration for Reynolds numbers above 6000 was developed in which two master curves, one for very low concentrations which was the same for both tubes and parallel plates, and one for higher concentrations which differed for tubes and parallel plates, were found to represent the data very well for both polymers and all conduit sizes and Reynolds numbers. Additionally, relationships were found between conduit size and maximum fraction laminarization and optimum polymer concentration.

Notes: Aqueous solutions with 1.5 to 6.5 wt-% poly(vinyl pyrrolidone), PVP, are converted to stable gels by reaction with potassium persulfate. Large quantities of persulfate are needed for high-modulus gels, 50% to 150% of the weight of PVP being required typically. The shear modulus G′ can be measured during reaction by making the gel the restoring element in a simple torsion pendulum. The increase in modulus to a maximum plateau value of G′max can be expressed as a first-order process: \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ - \ln [1 - (G'/G'_{\max } )] = Kt $$\end{document} Where t is elapsed time of reaction and K increases with the square root of polymer concentration. G′max varies with the second power of the polymer concentration. It also increases rapidly with increasing temperature of reaction and with persulfate/PVP ratio.
