    Notes: Local 8-methoxypsoralen black-light treatment was carried out on sixty-two patients. For the first time, oil was employed as a preparation base in order to increase the transparency and so the effectiveness of irradiation. Also the need for a descaling pretreatment was avoided. In investigations still being carried out, 27.5% patients showed very good improvement, 48.4% good and 24.2% unsatisfactory results of treatment. In many cases, less than fifteen irradiation sessions were necessary for clinical healing. However, to obtain a uniform pigmentation, additional irradiation proved necessary.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary In four cases of hairy cell leukemia a cytochemical polymorphism concerning acid phosphatase (AP) is evident. Any AP is lacking in all hairy cells of one case; only tartrate inhibitable AP is occurring in two cases; in another case tartrate resistant AP is found in high activity. Thus, the lack of tartrate resistant AP seems not to be an argument against hairy cell leukemia.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Mit Hilfe zytochemischer Untersuchungen kann bei der Haarzell-Leukämie ein Polymorphismus der sauren Phosphatase (SP) nachgewiesen werden. In einem von vier untersuchten Fällen fehlt jegliche SP in den Haarzellen, bei zweien ist nur tartratsensible SP nachweisbar, im vierten tartratresistente SP in hoher Aktivität. Nach unseren Erfahrungen spricht das Fehlen tartratresistenter SP nicht gegen die Diagnose Haarzell-Leukämie.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Der Gesamtstoffwechsel und die Aktivität eines Schlüssel-enzyms wurden mit Hilfe der Mikrokalorimetrie an menschlicher Epidermis untersucht. Der endogene Stoffwechsel der Haut mit einer Wärmeproduktion $$\dot Q$$ =-12 μW/mg Frischgewicht ließ sich durch Zugabe von Glukose auf $$\dot Q$$ =-12 μW/mg erhöhen. Als Testenzym wurde die Lactatdehydrogenase (LDH) gewählt, die in einem wesentlichen Schritt der anaeroben Glykolyse Pyruvat zu Lactat hydrogeniert. Epidermisstreifen zeigten eine LDH-Aktivität von 22 mU/mg. Die mikrokalorimetrische Methode wird im Hinblick auf ihre Verwendbarkeit bei Stoffwechseluntersuchungen an Proben von gesunder, kranker und behandelter Haut und an Zellkulturen diskutiert.
    Notes: Summary Microcalorimetry was used for the evaluation of metabolic and enzyme activity in human epidermis. The endogenous metabolism with a heat production $$\dot Q$$ =-2 μ W/mg wet weight could be stimulated to $$\dot Q$$ =-12 μ W/mg by adding glucose to the buffer. To test the enzyme activity, hydrogenation of pyruvate to lactate by lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) was chosen as an essential step of anaerobic glycolysis. The LDH activity of epidermis slices amounted to 22 mU/mg epidermis. The microcalorimetric method is discussed as a test procedure for specimens of healthy and diseased skin and for cell cultures.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Nach Bestimmung des Verteilungskoeffizienten von Coffein (Wasser/n-Octanol) und nach Angaben in der Literatur ist mit einer hohen Penetration von Coffein durch die menschliche Haut zu rechnen. Dies konnte in Abhängigkeit von verschiedenen Vehikeln an menschlicher Haut in vitro und in vivo bestätigt werden. 14C-markiertes Coffein wird schnell und in einer bis zu einem Maximum nach 100 min stetig ansteigender Menge in Epidermis und Corium aufgenommen. In vitro ist aufgrund des fehlenden Transportes durch Blut-und Lymphgefäße eine bis 450fache höhere Konzentration im Corium nach 1000 min Einwirkungszeit festellbar. Infolge der hohen Resorption in vivo ist die Konzentration nach 1000 min in der Haut nur noch äußerst gering.
    Notes: Summary The distribution coefficient of caffeine (water/n-Octanol) and the estimation of caffeine in urine after local application indicate to a high permeation rate of caffeine through the skin. This could be confirmed by using different vehicles in vivo and in vitro. 14C labeled caffeine penetrates rapidly the epidermis and corium. The maximum of absorption is reached at 100 min after local application in vivo. In vitro by absence of the transport possibilities of blood and lymph vessels, the concentration at 1,000 min after local application is 450 x higher than in vivo. Therefore, after 1,000 min in vivo the concentration of caffeine in the different skin layers is very low.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Penetrationsuntersuchungen mit radiomarkiertem Triamcinolon-acetonid in Salbe und Creme zeigen, daß sowohl bei unveränderter als auch bei psoriatischer Haut 70–90% des applizierten Medikaments auf der Hautoberfläche bleibt. Normale Hornschicht kann bis zu 30% des Steroids als Reservoir aufnehmen. Trotzdem wird eine schnelle Penetration in die lebenden Lagen der Haut beobachtet. In der Epidermis werden 5 ⋅ 10−6 bis 3 ⋅ 10−5 molare Konzentrationen (bezogen auf 1 1 Gewebe) erreicht. Die Urinausscheidung dauerte mehr als 72 h nach Entfernung des Substanzüberschusses von der Hautoberfläche. In psoriatischer Haut werden 3–10mal höhere Konzentrationen gefunden als in normaler Haut. Diese Penetrationserhöhung liegt in derselben Größenordnung, wie sie von uns durch artefizielles Entfernen der Hornschicht mittels Hornschichtabriß beschrieben wurde.
    Notes: Summary Penetration studies of radiolabelled Triamcinolone acetonide from ointment or cream preparations revealed that in cases of normal as well as psoriatic skin 70–90% of the applied substance remains on the surface. Normal horny layer stores up to 30% of the steroid. Nevertheless, a rapid penetration into the living layers of the skin is observed, whereby the epidermal concentrations reach levels between 5 ⋅ 10−6 and 3 ⋅ 10−5 M (mol per liter of tissue). The excretion in the urine took more than 72 h after removal of the excess of substance from the skin. In psoriatic skin, the epidermal and dermal concentrations were 3–10 times higher than in normal skin. This increase lies in the same range as the one resulting from removal of the horny layer by stripping prior to the application, as reported earlier.

    Notes: Abstract Streptococcus pyogenes, group A, type 50, one of the few group A streptococcal types naturally occuring in mice, proved highly virulent in this species after experimental infection. Intranasal infection of 96 mice (Swiss albino, NMRI, and CBA) with this microorganism induced profound reactions in the cervical lymph nodes of 69% of the animals. Histologically, two different forms of reaction were distinguishable. In 61 mice, the lymph nodes exhibited follicular and lymphoplasmacellular hyperplasia and in 9 animals suppurative lymphadenitis was present. The ability of type 50 streptococci to persist in the pharynx of mice, and the similarity of the morphological changes induced by this organism appear to make intranasal murine group A, type 50, streptococcal infection a suitable model for human streptococcal pharyngitis.

    Description / Table of Contents: Anodic Oxidation of Conjugated Dienes1,3-Butadiene, isoprene, 1,3-cyclohexadiene, 2,4-hexadiene, 1,3-pentadiene, 2,3-dimethyl-1,3-butadiene, 1-acetoxy-1,3-butadiene, and β-ionylideneethane are oxidatively dimerized or dimethoxylated in an undivided cell at graphite-, platinum-, or glassy carbon anodes in methanol/NaClO4 to form substituted dimethoxyoctadienes or dimethoxybutenes. The dimerization is favored by graphite-, carbon cloth-anodes, and dienes being unsubstituted at the terminal positions. The dienes are irreversibly oxidized at peak potentials between EP = +1.04 to +2.0V (vs. Ag/AgCl); the peak potentials correlate linearly with the ionization potentials. For 2,4-hexadiene the n-value is 1.9 to 2.1, the electrochemical reaction order v = 0.98. The dimers are probably formed via radical cations that add as electrophiles to the diene with the formation of a 1,4-radical cation which, after oxidation, undergoes solvolysis or deprotonation.
    Notes: 1,3-Butadienen, Isopren, 1,3-Cyclohexadien, 2,4-Hexadien, 1,3-Pentadien, 2,3-Dimethyl-1,3-butadien. 1-Acetoxy-1,3-butadien und β-Jonylidenethan werden in einer ungeteilten Zelle an Graphit-, Platin- und Glaskohlenstoffanoden in Methanol/NaClO4 zu substituierten Dimethoxyoctadienen oxidativ dimerisiert bzw. zu Dimethoxybutenen dimethoxyliert. Die Dimerisierung wird durch Graphit-, Kohletuchanoden und endständig unsubstituierte Diene begünstigt. Die Diene werden irreversibel bei Peakpotentialen zwischen EP = +1.04 bis 2.0 V (gegen Ag/AgCl) oxidiert; die EP-Werte korrelieren linear mit den Ionisierungspotentialen. Für 2,4-Hexadien beträgt der n-Wert: 1.9-2.1 und die elektrochemische Reaktionsordnung v = 0.98. Die Dimeren bilden sich vermutlich über Radikalkationen, die sich elektrophil an das Dien zu einem 1,4-Radikalkation addieren, das oxidiert und anschließend methanolysiert wird.
