Notes: [Auszug] Polycarbosilane (PC) is prepared as follows: suitable quantities of metallic sodium and xylene are mixed, and then heated to 110 C in a stream of inert gas. Dimethyl-dichlorosilane is then added. The chlorine in the dimethy-dichlorosilane reacts with sodium on stirring, producing sodium chloride. ...

Notes: [Auszug] The SiC powders used are 99.99% pure ?-SiC, with an average particle size of 3 /*m. To these are added 10% by weight of polycarbosilane (PC)6,7 with an average molecular weight of 800 dissolved in a suitable quantity of n-hexane, which is then removed by evaporation. Particles 10304mm in size ...

Notes: [Auszug] Table 1 shows a chemical analysis of the SiC fibre obtained after heat-treatment (1,300 C) of the precursor fibre. Its atomic ratio is Si : C : O : H = l : 1.46:0.36:0.03. Table 1 shows that the SiC fibre contains appreciable amounts of carbon and of oxygen which had been introduced by the heating ...

Notes: Abstract A rapid quenching apparatus employing a laser beam was developed to obtain the glassy state of oxides which have high melting temperatures. Using this apparatus, the glassy state in Ln-Ti-O, Ln-Nb-O and Ln-Ta-O (Ln=lanthanides) systems was investigated. The range of compositions which produced glasses and the crystallization process were studied in detail, and the metastable phases, which appear during the crystallization process, were examined by differential thermal and X-ray diffraction analysis.

Notes: Abstract Glasses of Gd2O3 · x Al2O3 compositions where x represents 5/3, 4 and 6, were prepared using a rapid quenching apparatus and a laser beam. The crystallization process of the glasses was studied by means of differential thermal analysis (DTA), X-ray diffraction analysis and electron microscopy. The crystallizations of Gd2O3 · 5/3Al2O3, Gd2O3 · 4Al2O3 and Gd2O3 · 6Al2O3 are complex and exhibit one, two and three exothermic peaks in DTA measurement with increasing Al2O3 concentration, respectively. The crystallization process of Gd2O3 · 5/3Al2O3 glass involved the direct formation of the gadolinium aluminium garnet, 3Gd2O3 · 5l2 3 (GdAG), which is not obtained by the ordinary solid phase reaction. After crystallization of Gd2O3 · 4Al2O3 and Gd2O3 · l2 3 glass, both phases become a mixture of Gd2O3 · Al2O3 (perovskite type) and α-Al2O3.

Notes: Abstract A new material was developed by introducing an organo-metallic polymer into powder metallurgy. In the uniform mixture of Fe- 13Cr* alloy powder and polycarbosilane (PC) usingn-hexane, the Fe-13Cr particles were coated with PC. The product of Fe-13Cr + 10wt% PC, obtained by hot-pressing the mixture, was subjected to an oxidation test, high-temperature hardness measurement and a wear resistance test, and found to be superior in all respects to that without the PC addition. The structure was observed by transmission electron microscope and it was found that grains of CrSi2 and Cr7 C3 about 0.1μm in size, dispersed uniformly in the Fe-13Cr + 10% PC, contributed to improvement of the mechanical properties. Observation by scanning electron microscope showed some difference in the formation of the oxidation film between Fe-13Cr and Fe-13Cr+10% PC. This new alloy, while adding an organo-metallic polymer to powder metallurgy, has several outstanding features with the possibility of many applications in the future.
