Notes: Abstract For a sample in an open system (e.g. the vacuum of the electron microscope) the mass flux leaving the sample due to either sample evaporation, sublimation or thermal degradation will be uniquely controlled by the sample temperature. Classical kinetic theory shows that the mass flux rate depends on sample temperature and vapour pressure. By measuring the local rate of mass loss one can thus arrive directly at the local specimen temperature. Moreover, temperature-dependent kinetics of the phase change from the condensed phase to the vapour phase may be used to determine the local sample temperature over a continuous range of temperature due to heat input to the sample from the sample stage environment and the incident electron beam.

Notes: Abstract Crazes have been produced in polycarbonate by atomizing acetone over uniaxial stressed solvent cast thin films. Transmission electron microscopy shows that two types of craze orientation exist. Crazes are formed perpendicular to the applied stress direction and at approximately 55° to the applied stress direction. The craze structures observed at 55° to the applied stress direction are suggested to result from cavitation of pre-existing deformation bands. The internal morphology of each type of craze is similar, and the fibre diameter, void size and craze width of each type depends on the amount of craze development. The structure of the craze-matrix interface is, however, different for each type of craze. Necking and work-hardening of the fibres occurs at the normal craze-matrix interface, whereas a rough undrawn interface exists for the angular crazes.

Notes: Abstract The dark-field diffraction contrast images of several types of fold domain boundaries in polyethylene single crystals have been characterized. Macrosector, microsector, {110} and {310} twin boundary contrast are shown to be due to the image shift which occurs when two diffracted beams contribute to the dark-field image.

Notes: Truncated, six-sided single crystals of a 10-16 linear polyester were grown from dilute solution in hexanol, deposited onto Mylar film, and uniaxially deformed at room temperature. For elongations below 10%, the crystals deform uniformly; however, above 20% elongation many cracks spanned by fibrils of 300 Å diameter develop approximately normal to the applied stress direction. Depending on the position of the crystal relative to the draw direction, lateral buckling pleats and cleavage cracks can also occur. Collapse of the nonplanar crystals onto the substrate with a resulting nonuniform adherence of the crystal influences the deformation. The deformation morphology is compared to that of truncated sixfold sector polyethylene crystals. Most notably, in contrast to polyethylene, {010} fold sectors do not deform differently from {110} fold sectors and phase boundaries between {110} and {010} fold sectors do not fracture easily.
