Notes: There has been a pronounced reluctance to experiment with flexible work schedules in so-called production areas, because of fears that the discretion granted individuals in their use of time would result in a fall in productivity. This article describes a first approach to calculating the amount of flexibility that can be given a group of employees in a production unit, in order to ensure that, even when they exploit the discretion to the full extent, there will always be work for everyone and other, interdependent, production units (or customers) do not suffer.

Notes: [Auszug] The recently developed overall autoradiographic method11 is based on in vitro labelling of receptors, since in vivo labelling results in low ratios of specific to nonspecific binding12'13 and because it is desirable to use human postmortem tissues. Previously, in vitro labelling of receptors in ...

Notes: The purpose of this paper is to improve the explanation, given by Woodhead-Galloway & Machin [Acta Cryst. (1976), A32, 368-372] for the marked diffuse near-equatorial X-ray scattering seen in the diffraction patterns of rat-tail tendon and other collagens. That paper suggested a lateral liquid-like disorder among the molecules, but the treatment involved a number of simplifications, the most important being its restriction to an equatorial projection. This paper elaborates on the treatment and provides two different versions each dealing with the problem in three dimensions. The first approach derives the crystallographic consequences of the random-stagger model for the fibril proposed by Grant, Cox & Horne [Nature (London), (1965). 207, 822- 8261. The second approach relaxes the strict crystallography assumed in the treatment of the model of Grant et al. (1965); instead it suggests a stochastic analogy with the theory of Woodhead-Galloway [Acta Cryst. (1977). B33, 1212-1218] for the off-equatorial reflections seen in the diffraction pattern of rat-tail tendon. An addition, the opportunity is taken to remove a discrepancy between theory and experimental results by introducing the fanning of the diffraction pattern (which has its origins in molecular tilting or in fibril shearing).

Notes: Abstract In photoelastic stress analysis, a need sometimes exists for a birefringent material in which the experimenter has the ability to vary its mechanical or elastic properties. It was the intent of this investigation to produce a homogeneous, isotropic solid with variable mechanical properties and which was suitable for photoelastic use. This goal is accomplished through the fabrication of a discontinuous composite where the birefringent constitutents have matched indices of refraction in the unstressed state. The constituents of this composite are solid-glass microspheres embedded in a polyester matrix. Three theories are formulated to define the stress-induced birefringent phenomena found in composites of this nature. Conventional photoelastic techniques were employed to produce data appropriate for comparison to the predictions of these theories.
