Notes: Abstract Diazepam was compared to placebo and phenobarbital sodium in a double-blind study with 472 anxious psychoneurotic patients. Patients were treated in 3 settings — medical clinic, general practice, and private psychiatric practice. The treatment setting was found to be at least as important as the medication in producing a treatment response. Drug effects were pronounced. Compared to phenobarbital patients, diazepam patients more often completed the study, followed prescribed dosage, and reported fewer side reactions. Diazepam patients did not differ from placebo patients in dosage intake or side effects, only in higher completion rate. Population effects indicated clinic patients to drop out and deviate from dosage more than private patients. General practice patients reported the most and private psychiatric patients reported the least side effects. These differences are explained in terms of patient background and behavioral patterns and of a medical as opposed to a psychiatric orientation toward treatment.

Notes: Two series of glass-reinforced diallyl phthalate molding compounds from two different manufacturers were evaluated using a Rheometrics, Inc. Mechanical Spectrometer and a Brabender Torque Rheometer. Comparison of reactivity and minimum viscosity as measured by these two instruments is presented. The Mechanical Spectrometer appears capable of differentiating smaller changes in melt viscosity than does the Brabender Torque Rheometer.

Notes: Methacryloyl chloride was polymerized in a number of solvents, and the polyacid chloride was converted into the methyl ester. The yield and viscometric molecular weight are given for each sample, whereas the osmometric molecular weight is given for selected samples. The choice of solvent controls the degree of polymerization between the limits of 500 and 8,800. Polymer yields were about 20% and the degree of polymerization was 1500 when dioxane was used as a solvent, whereas the yield increased to 45% and the DP was very high when such solvents as cyclohexane and n-hexane were used. Polymerization in solvent mixtures gave intermediate molecular weight values. Infrared analysis showed the presence of anhydride.

Notes: The boron/curcumine/oxalic acid complex is formed with advantage in dioxan so that the estimation of traces of boron becomes less delicate than when it is effected in ethanolic solution. It is possible to estimate 0,5-3,0,μg of boron with a precision of ± 3%.

Notes: The presence of a p-bromoaniline initiator fragment in polyglycine formed from N-carboxyglycine anhydride has been confirmed by bromine and infrared analyses. Carius halogen analyses, sodium fusions, and Beilstein halogen tests prove the presence of bromine in the polymer. Both the per cent bromine and the per cent amino nitrogen data specify essentially the same molecular weight, 1500-1700, for the polymer. Per cent yield of polymer data provide a second-order catalytic constant for p-bromoaniline-initiated polyglycine in dioxane at 37°C. of 1.8 × 10-3 l. mole-1 sec.-1 for the first 51% of the reaction, and the calculated constant beyond that falls off rather rapidly.
