Notes: Summary The pattern of morphogenesis of the chitinous compound (jointed) setae of the larvae of polychaete Nereis vexillosa Grube was deduced from electron-microscopic analyses of many stages of secretion. Each seta is secreted over a period of three days within an epidermal follicle consisting of several lateral cells and a basal cell (chaetoblast). The configuration of the apical surface of the chaetoblast changes continuously during secretion. Secreted setal material is polymerized into longitudinally oriented setal filaments, probably by enzymes located on the surfaces of microvilli of the chaetoblast. As a result of this process the setae lengthen by basal appositional growth. We infer that the precise size and shape of each complex seta (a characteristic of the species and the age of the worm) is controlled by sequential modulations of the number, size, shape, arrangement and orientation of the microvilli of the chaetoblast. Each seta embodies a cryptic record of the activities of the chaetoblast on which it formed. The genetic and epigenetic mechanisms involved in chaetogenesis are problematic.

Notes: Summary Kölliker's tufts are transient epidermal bristles found on the external surfaces of late embryonic and juvenile octopods. The structure and growth of Kölliker's tuft is remarkably similar to that of polychaete setae. Each tuft is a fasicle of approximately 1500 distally tapered cannular rodlets located in an epidermal follicle composed of several lateral follicular cells and a single basal chaetoblast. The base of the follicle is associated with obliquely striated dermal muscle fibers. Together these elements comprise Kölliker's organ. The rodlets, composed of longitudinally oriented filaments, are separated basally from one another by a layered meshwork of interstitial filaments. Microvilli on the apical concave surface of the scyphate chaetoblast insert into the base of each rodlet. We infer that the tuft elongates by basal appositional growth and that glycoprotein secreted by the follicle cells is organized into filaments by the apical plasmalemma of the chaetoblast. Each microvillus serves as a template for the formation of a rodlet, therefore the number, size, shape, distribution and dynamic activity of the microvilli determine the morphology of the tuft.

Notes: A theoretical approach to equilibrium calculations for homogeneous real fluid mixtures is presented. The overall approach is developed for, although not theoretically restricted to, a corresponding states equation of state, z(Tr, pr). The method is applied to the gaseous ammonia synthesis data of Larson and Dodge. Excellent agreement was attained with the data. Quite significant improvement was observed over the ideal gas and ideal solutions approximations.

Notes: It was established that phenol-2,4-disulfonyl chloride and α-naphthol-2, 4-disulfonyl chloride introduce new intramolecular or tertiary bonds into lysozyme. The phenolic hydroxyl group seems to make the cross linking reagents soluble in aqueous media; it was established that a sulfonylating; species does dissolve prior to hydrolysis but that the chlorosulfonyl groups are hydrolyzed within seconds of dissolution. New covalently linked residues were shown to be introduced by different, spectra. Peptide maps of the lysozyme treated with phenol-2,4-disulfonyl chloride. peroxidized, and digested with trypsin showed definite deletions and additions when compared with the control. Partial analysis of the peptides showed that cross linking between ε-amino groups of lysine residues had occurred. A certain degree of stabilization of lysozyme to inactivation by certain inactivating conditions was noted after treatment with the two reagents. Ultra-centrifugal analysis of the lysozyme treated with phenol-2,4-disulfonyl chloride showed that there was no detectable fraction having a higher molecular weight than native lysozyme. Tentative assignments of positions of cross linking were made.

Notes: Measurements have been made of the electrical conductivity of water-saturated heterogeneous anion-exchange pyridinium membranes in their carbonate and hydroxyl ionic forms as a function of temperature. The pyridinium membranes were prepared from quaternized poly-4-vinylmethyl-pyridinium resin electrolyte incorporated in a polyvinylidene fluoride matrix; the ratio of the pyridinium electrolyte to polyvinylidene fluoride was 4 to 1 by weight. The ion-exchange capacity and water content of these anion-exchange pyridinium membranes were measured. Corresponding Arrhenius activation energies of ion transport of carbonate and hydroxyl counter-ions have been calculated. Self-diffusion coefficients and the equivalent conductances of these pyridinium membranes in their carbonate and hydroxyl counter-ion forms have also been determined over a wide temperature range and compared to the reported values for present quaternary ammonium anion-exchange membranes.

Notes: The electret potentials developed by reverse osmosis electret membranes help control the undesirable deposition of charged colloidal particles on the membrane surfaces during membrane desalination. These antifouling electret membranes should help prevent the costly flux declines normally associated with deposition of colloidal iron oxides on the reverse osmosis membrane surfaces.Homocharge and heterocharge behavior of cellulose acetate membrane electrets have been studied. Asymmetric reverse osmosis membranes and dense membrane films were studied. The homocharge and heterocharge of cellulose acetate reverse osmosis electret membranes have been explained.
