    Notes: A high-density polyethylene prepared at low pressures is characterized with respect to density, microscopic examination, mechanical properties, and diffusion. The data for the slowly cooled, nonisothermally crystallized polymer clearly indicate that the method of preparation grossly affects the final properties of the polymer.

    Notes: Interpenetrating polymer networks of polyacrylate (A) and poly (urethane-urea) (U) were prepared by mixing lattices of self-curing polyacrylate and urethane-urea prepolymer followed by subsequent curing of each network. The structures of the mixtures were analyzed by the dynamic viscoelasticity and the electron microscopy. It was found that a phase inversion occurred from the “U-phase particles in A-phase matrix” to the “A-phase in U-phase matrix” at A/U ≑ 30/70 as the U-phase content increases.With increasing A-phase content, tensile strength started to increase and elongation-to-break becomes almost constant after the A-phase formed a continuous phase. This implies that the tensile properties are closely related to the morphological features.

    Notes: The effect of pigments on the vapor sorption characteristics of a noncrosslinked polymer [poly(vinylacetate)] and a highly crosslinked polymer (epoxy type) were investigated. The fillers used in this study were a polar surface (titanium dioxide) and a nonpolar surface (copper phthalocyanine blue). With both polar and nonpolar fillers, a marked decrease in the sorption of organic vapors was noted at low relative pressures, even with very low filler content. At high vapor pressures, the sorption isotherm of the filled polymer approaches that of the unfilled polymer. It was also noted that the shape of the sorption isotherm of the filled polymer closely resembles that of the pure polymer below its glass transition temperature. The experimental results are discussed in terms of the partial immobilization of the polymer segments in the presence of fillers, as a result of the reduced number of possible configurations of the polymer chains.

    Notes: The swelling of highly crosslinked epoxy polymer films by organic vapor was investigated. The molecular weight per crosslinked unit obtained by applying the equation of rubber elasticity to sorption isotherms is in good agreement with the value estimated from chemical considerations.     Notes: The general correlation between ΔH†/T and log D0 in the diffusion of gases through polymers is discussed in terms of a linear free energy relationship. It is shown that the diffusion constant D can be expressed as log D = kα + constant, where k is a parameter characteristic of the diffusing gas and α is a parameter characteristic of the polymer. The relationships between structural characteristics of gases and polymers and the respective parameters k and α are discussed. The possible application of similar linear free energy relationships for the purpose of expressing the permeability constant (P) and the solubility coefficient (S) is also suggested.
