Description / Table of Contents: Flame spraying of aluminaCeramic coatings produced by the flame spraying process are intended to protect the basic material against corrosion, erosion and oxidation as well as to act as a thermal barrier. For this purpose, alumina was found to be particularly well suited because of its high melting point, hardness, chemical resistance and other favourable properties. With this material as a model substance, the basic processes encountered with the spraying of ceramic powders have been investigated. The investigations comprised the melting process in the flame jet, the composition, lattice structure and physical properties of the spray coating, and the adhesion of the latter on pure metals and alloys with different surface roughness conditions.Although the porosity of these coatings is small, it prevents them from offering complete protection against corrosion and oxidation. But the protection effect can be enhanced by using resistant intermediate metal or enamel layers, and by stabilizing the sprayed coating. Owing to their high abrasion resistance and thermal barrier effect, these coatings have already found a wide field of application.

Description / Table of Contents: Application of large-diameter pipes made of hard polyethyleneWith the aid of numerous illustrations, the applications of polyethylene pipes of relatively large diameters are surveyed. A special account is given of the advantages which such pipes may offer under different installation conditions. Especially in the Scandinavian countries  -  Norway, Finland and Sweden  -  where pipes are laid in the open even during the winter months, the toughness of hard polyethylene, even at low temperatures, is found to be a particular advantage. A special problem is posed by the need for a reliable jointing of large-diameter pipes. It is shown that, if the necessary conditions are adhered to, and if suitable aids are used, it is possible to obtain reliable butt welds, both between one pipe and another, and between pipe and welding collar. Such welding collars can be made in different ways. For instance, a mould is filled with the aid of an extruder and a rough cast prepared which, after cooling, is machined on a lathe. Pipes made of hard polyethylene are used not only for drinking water pipes but also for special purposes, e. g. cable protection pipes. For this purpose, a special technique, known as jetting method, is sometimes used for laying pipes across water.

Notes: Commercial triblock polymers (Kratons) consisting of polystyrene and a polydiene were characterized via gel permeation chromatography and small-angle x-ray scattering in order to determine the amount of free polystyrene and diblock material and to clarify the effect of these polymeric impurities on the morphology of solvent-cast samples. Gel permeation chromatography measurements revealed the Kratons to consist of 80-85% triblock, 15-20% diblock, and trace amounts of free polystyrene. Pure triblocks, impurity-doped pure triblocks, the Kratons, and a postpolymerically degraded Kraton were examined with regard to the effect of polymeric impurities on morphology. Small amounts (〈5%) of free polystyrene induce a regularization of the glassy domains, while increased amounts of this homopolymer apparently lead to diffuse phase boundaries. The presence of diblock polymer results in a loss of macrolattice details, indicating the presence of less ordered and more diffuse glassy domains.

Notes: Graft polymers of acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile and methyl methacrylate on polyhydroxy polymers such as cellulose and polyvinyl alcohol were prepared by anionic graft polymerization. The alkali alkoxide derivative of the polyhydroxy polymer backbone was used as initiator of polymerization. The graft polymerizations were carried out in liquid ammonia and other inert solvents at low temperature. Grafting was accompanied by considerable homopolymerization caused by chain transfer to monomer and to ammonia. The graft polymers were separated from homopolymers and unreacted polyhydroxy polymers by extraction with suitable solvents. The per cent of the grafted vinyl polymer increased with increase in the monomer and alkoxide concentration. No crosslinking occurred during the anionic graft polymerization, and soluble graft polymers were obtained.

Notes: Monomers of vinyl formate, vinyl acetate, vinyl propionate, and vinyl butyrate were carefully purified by distillation in a Vigreux column and in a 56-plate glass helixpacked Todd column. The refractive indices and boiling points of the purified monomers agreed with those given in the literature. The purified samples were exposed to the radiation of a quartz mercury lamp in order to produce several per cent polymer. The refractive indices are tabulated and plotted in graphs.

Description / Table of Contents: The rate of polymerisation of ethylene by the soluble ZIEGLER-NATTA-catalyst (C5H5)2Ti(C2H5)Cl/Al(C2H5)Cl2 was investigated in toluene as solvent. From the dependence of the initial rate of the polymerisation follows, that the primary complex, formed by the catalyst components, is not the active species of this system. The obtained dependences rather suggest, that the active species is to be viewed as an equilibrium product and the location of this equilibrium is determined by the ratio of the catalyst compounds in that manner, that only at high Al/Ti-ratios the charged Ti(IV)-compound is equal to the initial concentration of the active species. The existence of such an equilibrium is also suggested by the increase of the rate, occuring at lower Al/Ti-ratios, when polymer is falling out. The desactivation of propagating chains is of complex nature. Considerable desactivation of the active species by the aluminiumorganic compound is obtained.

Description / Table of Contents: In the course of emulsion polymerization of SBR the rate of polymerization during the stage of particle formation is running through a significant maximum, if initiation takes place with a redox-system, consisting of the partially oil-, partially water-soluble components pinenehydroperoxide, ethylenediamine-tetraacetic acid, ferrous sulfate and rongolite. This anomaly is discussed by means of a reaction scheme, which, among other steps, postulates radical formation directly in the micelles themselves.

Description / Table of Contents: The molecular weight of polyamides can be changed by postcondensation in the solid state. The equilibrium molecular weight distribution in the partially crystalline polyamide can be calculated using reasonable assumptions. Under equal post-condensation conditions the calculation yields a higher molecular weight average for the partially crystalline material as compared with the amorphous one, while the type of the distribution function (SCHULZ-FLORY) remains nearly unchanged.

Description / Table of Contents: Solution properties of polyoctenamers were studied. A relation [η]-M in toluene at 25°C was elucidated. The kθ-value derived from this relation agrees quite well with similar data of polybutadiene, polypentenamer and polyethylene. No evidence was found for the existence of cyclic structures in polyoctenamers.
