    Notes: Abstract The concept of employing osculating reference position and velocity vectors in the numerical integration of the equations of motion of a satellite is examined. The choice of the reference point is shown to have a significant effect upon numerical efficiency and the class of trajectories described by the differential equations of motion. For example, when the position and velocity vectors on the osculating orbit at a fixed reference time are chosen, a universal formulation is yielded. For elliptical orbits, however, this formulation is unattractive for numerical integration purposes due to Poisson terms (mixed secular) appearing in the equations of motion. Other choices for the reference point eliminate this problem but usually at the expense of universality. A number of these formulations, including a universal one, are considered here. Comparisons of the numerical characteristics of these techniques with those of the Encke method are presented.

    Notes: Abstract This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the Mars orbital phase of the Mariner 9 trajectory as determined from Earth based radio data. Both the method and accuracy of the orbit determination process are reviewed. Analysis is presented to show the effects of Mars gravity model and node in the plane of the sky errors on the accuracy of orbit determination. In addition the long term evolution of the orbit from insertion through the first 500 revolutions is presented, and decomposed into effects from the Mars garvity field,n-body perturbations, and solar radiation pressure. Since the orbit period is nearly commensurable with the Mars rotational period, the orbit experiences significant resonance perturbations. The primary perturbation is in-track with a maximum amplitude of 1000 km and a wavelength of 39 spacecraft revolutions.

    Notes: Summary The O2-uptake during running at different speed between 10 and 20 km/hour on a horizontal treadmill has been compared. A straight lined increase in O2-uptake with increasing speed was found. Determinations of O2-deficit and O2-debt showed, however, that the total energy output did not follow that line. At high speed the energy output showed a steep increase. The explanation for this is apparently that at high speed a significant part of energy has to be delivered by anaerobic processes involving low efficiency.

    Notes: Summary During skiing a maximum O2-uptake of 5,2l/min was recorded with a trained student as a subject; with two other élite skiers 5 liters O2 per minute was found. A trained female subject showed an O2-intake of 4,17l/min and an other female subject had an O2-intake of 64,5 cc/min/kg body weight, presumably the highest values ever recorded in women. In connection with ski competitions youngsters had often pulse values above 250 beats per minute. The maximum values recorded were as high as 270. Proteinuria occurred practically in all subjects and erythrocytes were found in 28% of the urines of trained skiers after competitions. Skiing is the most economical and fastest way of transportation on snow, but even at a relatively low speed the energy output is high.     Notes: Summary The possibility of using heart rate and body temperature as indices of metabolic rate during work has been investigated. Pulse determinations can advantageously be used at work of short duration whereas body temperature determinations can be useful for work of long dunation. These methods have to be used with great care due to the fact that both heart rate and body temperature can vary independent of metabolic rate.
