Notes: [Auszug] IN many laboratories various types of semi-solid culture media are routinely dispensed in Petri dishes for use in the study of micro-organisms. The automatic agar dispenser described in this article was originally designed for rapid and reasonably accurate transfer of melted agar to plates for ...

Notes: Abstract With regard to experimental applications in plasma diagnostics numerical approximations are given for the Gurevic-type correction functions, which in the kinetic theory of weakly ionized plasmas describe the deviations from the Lorentzian electrical conductivity. The approximations are based either upon the dependance of the collision frequency on the power of the electron velocity, or on a first order Taylor expansion around the most probable electron velocity of a Maxwellian distribution. For all assumptions regarding the velocity dependance of the collision frequency the influence of temperature (and pressure) on the effective collision frequency is indicated.

Notes: Abstract The electron collision frequencies for four flames of different temperature and composition have been determined by means of measuring simultaneouslyX-band microwave attenuation and phase shift, which originate from the complex conductivity of the flame plasma. Hence the method can also be used for the determination of the collision frequencies of time dependent plasmas. In order to enhance the small magnitude of the quantities to be measured one hundred equal flames burnt inside the waveguide. The measurements show: 1 In flames collisions of electrons with induced dipoles dominate (Lorentz-theory). 2 The collision frequencies depend on the flame temperatureand on the chemical composition.

Notes: Summary The components of the amniotic fluid were examined with morphological and chemico-analytical methods shortly before parturition. 1. Light microscopically, the following structural components can be detected: desquamate epidermal cells, solitary amnioepithelial cells apparently without vitality, fat particles and precipitations including mucopolysaccharides. In some tests meconium particles were found although the colour of the amniotic fluid was not changed. 2. In order to obtain further evidence for the composition of the fat particles which where previously studied by means of histochemical methods, a chemical analysis was undertaken. The presence of triglycerides, phospholipides and cholesterol (ester of cholesterol and free cholesterol) was shown; in addition, thinlayer-chromatography indicated the presence of diglycerides. The content of the lipid substances in amniotic fluid amounted to an average of 100%. The chemical analysis has revealed the presence of albumin, α-, β-, γ-globulin and acid mucopolysaccharides as components of the amniotic fluid.

Notes: Summary Observations on the changes of the synaptonemal complex at the end of pachytene and in diplotene are reported. The synaptonemal complex disintegrates in diplotene by progressive disjoining of the lateral arms. The structures of the pairing space disappear. A residual piece of the synaptonemal complex is interpreted as a transitional stage of the process of disintegration. The lateral arms form single threads which disappear at the end of diplotene. No doubleness of the lateral arms can be detected, except a splitting in 3–4 laminae in the region near the fixation points at the nuclear envelope. The lateral arms do not separate in subunits at the end of the meiotic prophase. Chiasmata can not be recognized.
