Notes: [Auszug] IN the course of an extended investigation into the properties of thin metal films, of the order of 50 atoms in thickness, we have observed an early stage in the crystallisation which presents peculiar properties. The films, of gold and of silver, were prepared by cathodic sputtering on various ...

Notes: [Auszug] I WAS extremely interested to read, in NATUBE for Oct. 24, Prof. G. W. Stewart's letter, in which he states that his X-ray diffraction experiments strongly support my theory of viscosity, and I look forward with eagerness to reading the full account of his results. We are both in agreement that ...

Notes: [Auszug] THE viscosity of liquids is a subject which, so far as I know, has hitherto been without any general theoretical basis. No physical mechanism, for example, has ever been brought forward to account even for so simple and general a fact as the decrease of liquid viscosity with temperature, in ...

Notes: [Auszug] I AM naturally gratified at the interest which my brief letter on liquid viscosity, published in NATURE of Mar. 1, seems to have aroused. In view of the correspondence which has ensued I should like first to indicate briefly the theoretical considerations, mentioned in passing in my former letter, ...

Notes: [Auszug] FROM the recent papers by Mr. P. S. H. Henry1 and others, it appears that interest is being taken in the phenomena which occur in a sounding tube. It may be well to direct attention to some results I have obtained, publication of which will shortly take place, having been delayed ...

Notes: [Auszug] WITH the view of making accurate measurements of the velocity of sound, and hence of the ratio of the two principal specific heats of gases, we have been studying the formation of dust figures in a sounding tube. Instead of using a stroked rod to produce the vibrations of known frequency, as ...

Notes: Abstract The usual distinction in quantum mechanics between pure states and mixtures is shown not to be independent of the interpretation adopted. Thus, in a causal theory, certain states should be regarded as sharing the nature of both pure states and mixtures and, as a result, important questions in the theory of measurement must be considered in a different light.
