    Notes: The applicability of Hertz's theory of impact to the case of rigid spheres colliding with rubber has been studied over a wide range of impact conditions. In general, the theory is adequate; but in many practical cases, the influence of the finite thickness of the sample is significant. Using previously published data on the influence of thickness on static indentation measurements, this effect can be predicted and good agreement with experiment is found. Resilience measurements have been made over a range of impact conditions. The time of impact, rather than its severity as such, was found to be the factor governing the resilience for the unfilled materials studied, provided that there was no slip of the sample relative to its holder. Slippage can occur if the sample is too thin, due to the shear stresses developed at the rear surface, and this results in the observed resilience being anomalously low.

    Notes: The radiation-induced grafting of a series of monomers onto a wide range of paraffin waxes was attempted. Although no grafting could be achieved and only homopolymers were formed, the rates of homopolymerization were greatly enhanced in the presence of the wax. This phenomenon is ascribed to processes of energy transfer from the irradiated wax to the monomer.

    Notes: Since the accidental rediscovery of the endosteal implant by Formaggini in the late 1940's, the field has witnessed a tremendous evolution in theory and clinical application. Chercheve, in his efforts to improve on earlier spiral designs, proposed several theories on the relationship of the metallic endosteal implant to its osseous environment. Some of the problems he experienced still have not been overcome in our present designs.The development of the blade implant marked a true advancement in endosteal design. This implant proved to be much more functional and reliable than the spiral concept; however, it too had certain disadvantages which became obvious after a relatively short period of clinical trial. The anchor endosteal implant was developed as a result of efforts to correct the various problems associated with the blade.Preliminary animal research using both anchor and blade implants was begun. Four dogs had each type of implant inserted in edentulous areas. The animals were sacrificed four months post insertion for histologic examination. More sophisticated animal implant studies are being performed at the Brookdale Hospital Medical Center.Clinical evaluation of the anchor implant over a 3-year period has been very encouraging. Results have indicated a higher level of clinical success than previously achieved with blade or spiral designs.

    Notes: This paper presents a review of 338 metallic endosteal oral implants of six designs that had been in situ for periods of up to seven years as observed by members of the Brookdale Group. Of the 338 impervious alloplastic endosteal implants studied, none but the endodontic endosteal implant demonstrated positive long range findings. It would appear that the eventual demise of endosteal implants is predictable on a basis of time.

    Notes: The radiation-induced copolymerization of isobutyl vinyl ether with trichloroethylene was investigated in the temperature range from -50°C to 100°C over a wide range of comonomer compositions. A copolymer was obtained in which the monomers alternate with regularity along the polymer chain over essentially the entire range of comonomer compositions. Both the rate of copolymerization and the number-average molecular weight of the resulting copolymer were found to depend strongly on the initial comonomer composition. The monomer reactivity ratios were determined and correspond well with calculated values. An apparent activation energy of 3.2 kcal/mole was obtained for the copolymerization process which exhibits a dose rate dependence of 0.72. The number-average molecular weight was found to be strongly dependent on the irradiation temperature, reaching a maximum value at 5°C.
