Notes: The most commonly used geometry for the Berg–Barrett X-ray microscopy uses the zero-layer reflections as described by Newkirk. It can be shown that non-zero-layer reflections, skew-plane reflections, can be used equally well to obtain X-ray micrographs. The analysis of the stereographic representation of the skew-reflection geometry demonstrates the many usable reflections and gives the conditions for minimum image distortion. In these X-ray micrographs the contributions to diffraction contrast from shadowing and sub-boundaries can be identified. An estimate of the height of steps occurring on the crystal surface can also be made.

Notes: The surface structure of zinc single crystals subjected to a sublimation treatment has been studied by the techniques of optical metallography, optical goniometry and by Laue X-ray diffraction. Right cylinders with a 〈001〉 axis were enclosed, with titanium getter material, in Vycor tubes evacuated to 10−5 mm Hg and heated to temperatures in the vicinity of 370°C for periods of 100 to 200 hr. A thermal gradient existed in the evacuated chamber such that zinc was transported from one end of the tube to the other end. The sublimation process exposed macroscopically visible crystallographic planes in local regions of the crystals. The three-dimensional structure of the facet morphology has been determined. The exposed planes are of the type {10{\bar 1}0}, {40{\bar 4}1}, {30{\bar 3}1}, {30{\bar 3}2}, {10{\bar 1}1}, {40{\bar 4}5}, {20{\bar 2}3} and {10{\bar 1} 10}. The {0001} surfaces were relatively unaffected by the sublimation process. The facet structures appear to be related to some extent to the dislocation substructure and also to the Gibbs–Wulff surface energy construction for zinc.

Notes: Abstract Consideration is given to the possibility that compact bovine femur material undergoes a ductile-to-brittle transition behaviour which is similar in some respects to that which occurs for certain metallic materials. Evidence for this possibility is derived from compressive and tensile bulk strength measurements reported over a range of temperatures and from scanning electron microscope (SEM) observations of specimen fracture surfaces which resulted from tests at 77, 190 and 463K. The ductile versus brittle appearance of the SEM fractographs is difficult to discern relative to metal fracture because of the complex bone histology.
