Notes: Abstract A study was made of the (n, n), (n, n′), and (n, n′ γ) reactions which occur when a natural rubidium scattering sample is exposed to mono-energetic neutron fluxes of energies ranging from 120 to 1910 keV. Total cross sections, elastic scattering angular distributions and excitation functions for inelastic scattering were measured with a neutron time-of-flight spectrometer. Results are compared with Hauser-Feshbach theory. A 40 cc Ge(Li) detector was used in the time-gated mode to measure γ-rays from the (n, n′ γ) reaction. The latter measurements were used to refine and extend the energy level schemes derived from neutron spectroscopy. Several new levels were discovered in the low-lying (below 1900 keV) energy level spectra of85Rb and87Rb. Gamma decay schemes and branching ratios were determined for the low-lying levels of85Rb and87Rb.

Notes: Abstract A study was made of the(n, n), (n, n′) and (n, n′ γ) reactions which occur when a cesium scattering sample is exposed to mono-energetic neutrons of energies ranging from 120 to 1910 keV. Total cross sections, elastic scattering angular distributions and excitation functions for inelastic scattering were measured with a neutron time-of-flight spectrometer. Results are compared with statistical theory. A 40 cc Ge(Li) detector was used in the time gated mode to measure γ-rays from the (n, n′ γ) reaction. These data were used to refine and extend the energy level scheme derived from the neutron spectroscopy measurements and mainly confirm the results of recent, similar measurements.

Notes: Abstract Using time-of-flight methods to discriminate against neutron induced backgrounds, a 40 cm3 Ge(Li) detector was used to observe the γ-rays from the127I(n, n′ γ) reaction. Based on these γ-rays, energy level and decay schemes are derived up to an excitation of 1780 keV in127I. This scheme shows seventeen new levels, whilst the existence of two levels recently determined in Coulomb excitation studies are confirmed. The level scheme is compared with the intermediate coupling unified model predictions.

Notes: Summary The snake venom toxin, α-bungarotoxin, is known to bind specifically to the acetylcholine receptor at skeletal muscle endplates. In this study, tritiated α-bungarotoxin has been used in conjunction with electron-microscope autoradiography to visualize and enumerate acetylcholine receptor sites at the neuromuscular junctions of the mouse diaphragm. From an analysis of the grain distribution, the receptor sites appear to be located specifically on the postjunctional membrane. The density there is about 8,500/μ2 of membrane surface. For comparison purposes, cholinesterases and related active centers were labeled using [3H] diisopropylfluorophosphate; they were shown to be at this same concentration over the synaptic membranes (or along the cleft). The 1∶1 relationship of the receptors to the cholinesterase type of site, found previously to hold in studies on whole endplates, is also true at the ultrastructural level in this case. In fact, this 1∶1 relationship is believed to be a characteristic of the postsynaptic membranes of endplates in other muscles and other vertebrates. Based on the constant density value thus arrived at, the total surface areas of postsynaptic and of presynaptic membranes are at once obtained from the known total numbers of these sites per endplate, available from previous studies in this laboratory. Examples of such synaptic surface area values are given. These values are only reliable for a given muscle type if the approximate fiber size is defined.

Notes: Abstract The low-lying energy level and decay schemes of the stable bromine isotopes were studied by observing the γ-rays from the (n, n′γ) reactions in a natural bromine sample with the aid of a Ge (Li) detector. A pulsed neutron source and time-of-flight methods were used to reduce background due to neutron events in the detector. Most of the γ-rays observed could be assigned to transitions in either79Br or81Br. In addition to those levels previously known from γ-decay or Coulomb excitation experiments, several new levels were excited in each isotope.

Notes: Abstract The165Ho (n, ń) and165Ho (n, ń γ) reactions were utilized to obtain information on the energy levels of165Ho up to about 1400 keV excitation. A Ge (Li) detector was used in the time-gated mode to measure the de-excitation γ-rays. Neutrons were detected by a conventional time-of-flight spectrometer. Results from the two sets of measurements are combined to construct an energy level scheme for165Ho. The level scheme is compared with results from other sources and some new levels are proposed.
