Notes: Abstract Electron spin resonance techniques have been used to study the effects of double doping alumina with chromium and titanium. Measurements were made as a function of polar angle on the peak-to-peak derivative linewidths of the three Cr3+ transitions at room temperature for a range of samples containing about 0.02% chromium and between zero and 0.024% titanium. Theoretical linewidth variations, calculated from Van Vleck's dipolar broadening theory, were compared with experiment. For crystals singly doped with Cr3+ the theory fitted well qualitatively but gave values too great by a factor of seven, in agreement with previous studies. On addition of titanium, marked changes were seen experimentally in the Cr3+ linewidth polar plots. These showed a pronounced minimum near θ=55° in complete contrast to the behaviour of singly doped (Cr/Al2O3) crystals. This has been attributed to the formation of (Cr-Ti) complexes by some of the titanium ions.

Notes: Abstract The dielectric constants of 8 mol % single crystal yttria-stabilized zirconia have been measured, using both radio-frequency and microwave methods, before and after blackening by high temperature electrolysis. For as-grown material ε′ = 38±4 and tan δ = 0.004. After electrolysis both the dielectric constant and loss tangent of the current-blackened material increased; this experimental data has been compared with theoretical predictions for composite dielectrics. The dielectric behaviour in the current-blackened material was consistent with the formation of metallic particles; these initially appeared to be spherical but elongated as electrolysis proceeded.

Notes: Abstract Electron spin resonance linewidths of Gd7/2 in single crystal calcium tungstate (CaWO4) were examined experimentally and theoretically for Gd concentrations up to 0.05 at. %, the range over which single site occupation by gadolinium was maintained. The linewidths expressed as widths between points of maximum slope on derivative spectra, lay between 0.3 and 1.5 mT over the angular ranges 0° 〈 θ 〈 90° and 0 〈 φ 〈 90° explored. There is good agreement between the form of the angular variation of linewidth and calculation based on dipolar broadening theory. Quantitatively, however, the predicted values are about five time larger than the observed linewidths; this difference may be due to exchange narrowing.

Notes: Abstract The nature of the blackening caused by high-temperature electrolysis of 8 and 12 mol % yttria-stabilized zirconia single crystals has been investigated by studying the optical absorption between 260 and 700 nm. In the early stages the band edge remained at 271 nm, the crystal became red and the transmission showed a broad minimum centred at 480 nm; in the later stages the crystal became black and the transmission was reduced drastically over the whole visible range. The low transmission was shown, by integrating sphere measurements, to be due to absorbing centres. These were attributed to the formation of vacancy aggregates which ultimately produced colloidal metallic particles.
