Notes: Summary In this paper approximate expressions for the surface displacements due to a buried spherical source inside an isotropic elastic layer with one surface stress-free and the other (i) rigid, (ii) stress-free, have been obtained. Graphical representations for the surface displacements at a large distance have also been found.

Notes: Summary In 220 persons with and without obstructive bronchopulmonary disease, timed vital capacity, airway resistance and viscous work of breathing are compared. With linear decrease of timed capacity the mean airway resistance increases exponentially. Similar correlations were found between timed capacity and viscous work of breathing. The correlation between resistance and work of breathing is linear. Regression equations are developed for estimation of resistance and viscous work of breathing from timed capacity. Further equations are given for the correlation between resistance and work of breathing. These correlations do not apply to cases with quite different conditions during normal and forced breathing as for instance in bronchial collapse.

Notes: Abstract Regions of lattice disorder produced in lithium-doped float-zone melted n/p-type silicon solar cells by irradiation with mono-energetic neutrons at doses between 1010 and 1013/cm2 have been studied. The defect regions were revealed by chemically etching the surface of the solar cells and by observing carbon replicas in an electron microscope. It was found that the defect density increased with increasing irradiation dose and increased lithium content, whereas the average defect diameter was found to decrease. From thermal annealing experiments it was found that in the lithium-doped material the defect structure was stable at temperatures between 300 and 1200° K. This was found to be in contrast to the undoped material where at the lowest doses considerable annealing was observed to occur. The above results are discussed in terms of the theoretical predictions and models of defect clusters proposed by Gossick and Crawford and Cleland.

Notes: Abstract The infra-red spectra of the major cement minerals, synthetic mixes of the four important clinker phases and commercial clinkers and cements have been studied both by the absorption technique as well as by the attenuated total reflectance technique of powder samples. The possibility of general application of infra-red spectrometry in the quality control of clinkers and cements has been indicated especially with reference to the relative proportion of the tricalcium and dicalcium silicate phases. In this context the potentiality of the attenuated total reflectance technique in cement characterization has been especially emphasized.

Notes: A new and quick method, namely, the gaschromatographic technique, has been used to determine the solubility parameter of polyethylene. The calculated quantities of sorption of various pure components in polymer bears a logarithmic relationship to the experimental values.
