    Notes: Abstract In acute experiments on cats evoked potentials (EP) of the orbital cortex were recorded and the electrogenesis and functional purpose of individual components of associative responses (AR) were investigated. It was concluded that the initial negative fluctuation of the AR arises as a consequence of the physical propagation of potentials from the projection somatosensory cortex and the second, positive, component and the following negative component are the result of arrival of an afferent volley into the orbital cortex via specific thalamic nuclei. These two components are due to activation of neurons of the orbital cortex. The afterdischarge, which appears sometimes, develops under the effect of impulses arriving from nonspecific thalamic nuclei. It is shown that during the second, positive, phase of the AR, primarily afferent neurons are activated, and during the negative phase, efferent neurons of the orbital cortex. The afterdischarge, which complicates the negative phase of the AR, is due to inhibition of afferent neurons.

    Notes: Abstract The reactions of 164 neurons of the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) to stimulation of the mediodorsal nucleus of the thalamus (MD), the amygdaloid complex, and various sections of the hypothalamus, were investigated in acute experiments on cats. Stimulation of the MD led to the development in OFC neurons of reactions with a short (sometimes less than 6 msec) and stable latent period. Similar reactions were observed upon stimulation of the lateral amygdaloid nuclei. Stimulation of the basal and central nuclei of the amygdala evoked synchronization of the discharges in OFC neurons. Stable responses of OFC neurons developed from nuclei of the hypothalamus only in the lateral region. Stimulation of the other nuclei of the hypothalamus was accompanied by irregular responses or synchronization of the discharges. In an analysis of the material obtained, the functional characteristics of the connections between the structures investigated and OFC neurons were examined.

    Notes: Abstract Unit and focal responses arising in the parietal associative region (anterior part of the middle suprasylvian gyrus) to various forms of peripheral stimulation were investigated in acute experiments on cats anesthetized by intraperitoneal injection of chloralose (40 mg/kg) and pentobarbital (20 mg/kg). Under these conditions focal potentials of the associative response (AR) type appear. They consist of three components: negative, positive, and negative. The positive and second negative components have their polarity changed as the recording electrode is inserted to a depth of 1200–1500 µ. Two types of unit responses related to the development of the positive and negative phases are distinguished. This applies to responses of both monosensory and polysensory neurons, and even the same neuron may give responses of both first and second types because of their unstable latent period. In the case of intracellular or "partial intracellular" recording, excitatory and inhibitory postsynaptic potentials (EPSPs and IPSPs) corresponding to the first and second types of responses were observed, so that the total unit response had the form of an EPSP-IPSP-EPSP-IPSP sequence. With most neurons whose activity was recorded in this way the first EPSP and IPSP were not observed.

    Notes: Abstract Responses of 251 neurons in the anterior part of the middle suprasylvian gyrus to stimulation of primary sensory (auditory, visual, somatosensory) areas and also to acoustic, visual, and somatosensory stimuli were studied in acute experiments on cats anesthetized with chloralose (40 mg/kg) and pentobarbital (20 mg/kg). Three groups of neurons were distinguished by their responses to stimulation of the primary sensory areas: those responding by an increased firing rate (117) or by inhibition (35) and those not responding (99). Responses of 193 neurons to stimulation of the peripheral afferent systems were analyzed. Neurons of the parietal associative cortex responded more frequently to cortical stimulation than to peripheral. By the duration of the latent period of their response to cortical stimulation the neurons were divided into three groups: those with short (less than 20 msec), medium (20–30 msec), and long latent periods (over 30 msec). The first group was the largest.

    Notes: Abstract In acute experiments on cats anesthetized with pentobarbital and chloralose, focal responses were recorded to study projections of various parts of the orbitofrontal cortex and cortex of the temporal pole in the region of the medial dorsal nucleus of the thalamus and interaction in this nucleus between stimuli arriving from the medio-basal portions of the neocortex. Different parts of the orbitofrontal cortex were found to have local projections in the medial dorsal nucleus so arranged that the rostral zones of the cortex send stimuli to the medio-dorsal portions of the nucleus, whereas regions of the cortex radiating fanwise from the pole in dorsal and caudal directions are arranged in the lateral and basal portions of the nucleus. The cortex of the temporal pole has relatively diffuse projections in the medial part of the medial dorsal nucleus. Stimuli reaching the medial dorsal nucleus from the basal structures of the neocortex (temporal pole) were shown to facilitate response to stimulation of the orbitofrontal cortex. Meanwhile, stimulation of this region of the cortex depresses the receptive capacity of the nucleus for impulses arriving from the temporal cortex.
