Abstract The reaction by which copper ferrite is formed was studied in the temperature interval 800 to 950°C. The composition and the thickness of the reaction layer were obtained by electron probe microanalysis. The equilibrium concentrations of copper and iron at the reaction-layer boundaries and the concentration gradient across the layer were determined. The kinetic parameters of the reaction were calculated. The mechanism of the reaction was discussed on the basis of the observations.
