    Notes: Summary Detailed experimental data for conductivity and membrane potentials are presented for lecithin/cholesterol/decane bilayers in the presence of the uncoupler carbonylcyanidem-chlorophenylhydrazone (CCCP). These compare favorably with a theoretical model derived to explain the mechanism of action of uncouplers on bilayers. The model assumes that the weak acid uncoupler HA and its anion A− are the sole species which permeate the membrane. Its key feature is the recognition of the existence of unstirred aqueous layers on either side of the membrane. The model accounts for, among other things, a maximum in the transmembrane conductivity at a pH to the alkaline side of the uncoupler pK a and saturating current-voltage characteristics at high pH, both phenomena being found for CCCP. From a quantitative fit of model to data, values of 2.0×10−3 and 11 cm/sec are deduced for the permeability coefficients of the CCCP anion and the undissociated CCCP molecule, respectively.

    Notes: Summary Some merodiploids containing two different trpC alleles grow in the absence of added tryptophan. The trpC gene product is the bifunctional enzyme indoleglycerol phosphate synthetase but the ability to grow on minimal medium does not require that the alleles be dificient in different functions. This indication of complementation is supported by the evidence that the trpC alleles, of the merodiploids, can be transferred by transduction or by the trp-colV,B episome. Genetic recombination between episome and chromosome is seen to occur, but at a rate too low to explain the observed results. The nature of the interaction between the trpC alleles is not readily explained since indoleglycerol phosphate synthetase appears to consist of a single polypeptide chain in in vitro studies.

    Notes: Abstract The equations of motion applying to the wind field in a forest canopy are simplified to a balance between the shearing stress gradient and either the form-drag of the leaves in the upper dense canopy, or the overall horizontal pressure gradient in the more open space beneath. The equations imply that, in descending through the forest, the stress and wind vectors turn through an angle which depends on the forest characteristics and on the stability and the speed of the airflow above the forest. The turning is roughly confirmed by an overall average measured on a very flat site near Thetford, Norfolk, covered by an extensive uniform pine forest.
