Notes: [Auszug] Argyle attempts to explain ball lightning in terms of positive after-images, which have certain properties in common with the former. There seem to be two overriding objections to this conjecture. First, it is hard to understand the unanimity of description in cases where there have been many ...

Notes: [Auszug] Nevertheless, during the collapse of a spherically symmetric object, the metric near the surface will be changing rapidly on a time scale of T ~ 10-5 (M/M®) s, so that on general grounds the production of massless particles with energy of order h/? is expected. Many of these particles will escape ...

Notes: Abstract In this investigation, we attempt to analyze the quasi-linear cyclotron instability (under the weak turbulence regime) for whistler-mode waves due to pitch angle anisotropy of nonthermal electrons. The motivation of this study is to explain the triggered discrete VLF emissions occurring in the terrestrial magnetosphere. The time evolution of the growth rate and the induced waves spectrum for a loss cone type of nonthermal electrons is analyzed numerically. The diffusion of particles in pitch angles due to quasilinear cyclotron instability is illustrated. It is shown that several major features of triggered VLF emissions can be explained by the stated instability. Some predictions of the theory is given and suggestions for further research are presented.

Notes: Abstract We report the results of 1966, 1968, and 1969 polarization measurements of solar type III radio noise bursts made by recording the output of two orthogonally polarized receiving channels and subsequent digital processing of selected data. The processed data yield total intensity, degree of polarization, ellipticity, and polarization ellipse orientation at 1 second intervals. The measurements are made in a 100 Hz bandwith to minimize the influence of the propagating medium on the measurements. The mean degree of polarization was found to be about 65% in contrast to previous studies which indicated that type III events were more weakly polarized. By assuming that type III bursts are flare related we study the polarization characteristics of type III bursts as a function of the solar longitude of the related flares. The relation between type III event polarization characteristics and flare importance is also investigated. The significance of polarization measurements in studies of solar radio events is pointed out and suggestions for further theoretical research are given.

Notes: Abstract Statistical tests, based on the maximum-likelihood method, have been performed on flare series extending over several years. If all flares in each plage region are taken into account, a rich spectrum is obtained. If one carries out similar analysis of a ‘reduced’ flare series, which includes at most one flare from each plage region, the spectrum is almost devoid of structure, and what structure does remain is not statistically significant. The inference is that solar activity does not display genuine rigid-rotation modulation, but that repeated events from individual centers of activity yield modulation which may be mistaken for rigid-rotation modulation. A test for correlation between reduced flare series for the northern and southern hemispheres gives no significant correlation. This test therefore yieds no support to the hypothesis that solar activity is modulated by planetary effects.

Notes: Abstract The structure and energy balance of the chromosphere-corona transition region is investigated by means of a static, planar model which is compared with the results of XUV-resonance-line observations. In this model, the transition region is heated by thermal conduction from the corona and cooled by radiative losses. Comparison of the model with observational results implies that this is the dominant process in the energy balance of the transition region, and that the base of the transition region is inherently non-static and/or non-planar. The model explains the observational finding of Noyes et al. (1970) that the number density and the downward heat flux both increase by the same factor from quiet regions to active regions. The implications of these results are discussed with regard to spicules.
