Notes: Abstract Immediately after the adsorption period about 60% of the thrombocytes have phagocytized virus particles. About 2/3 of these cells contain numerous virions and are morphologically severely damaged. In the remaining morphologically not altered third of the thrombocytes only few virus particles can be encountered within vacuoles. After 7 h of incubation all virus containing cells are uniformly damaged, aggregates have become more frequent, and virus particles are mostly found within the extremely dilated perinuclear space. About 20–30% of the thrombocytes remain unchanged and free of virus even after 10 h of incubation. Virological studies show an increase of virus-specific activities starting between 1 and 3 h p.i.

Notes: Summary Nervous system tumors were induced in the offspring of BD-IX (inbred) and CFE (non-inbred) rats by transplacental administration of ethylnitrosourea. Tumors of the peripheral nervous system (PNS) were obtained in approximately 80% of all animals, and tumors of the central nervous system (CNS) in 16%. Although several peripheral nerves were sites of tumor formation, the trigeminal nerve was the most frequent nerve affected. In male CFE rats, 70% of all PNS tumors affected the trigeminal nerve. The incidence of trigeminal nerve tumors in female BD-IX rats was only 33% of PNS tumors. Light and electron microscopy showed that the PNS tumors are made-up of Schwann cells, and behave like malignant tumors. The tumors began as a proliferation of recognizable Schwann cells, later they lost their basement lamina, destroyed the nerve tissue and invaded neighboring structures, but did not metastasize. Like their human counterparts, they showed “dense” and “loose” areas. In both of these, Schwann cells were recognized as the tumor cells. Trigeminal nerve tumors were transplanted fromin vitro cultured cells or directly from transplanted fresh tumor fragments to isologous rats (BD-IX). Subcutaneous. intraperitoneal and intracerebral transplants were done. The morphology and behavior of the transplanted tumors were similar to the original malignant neurinomas.

Notes: Summary Malignant peripheral nerve tumors of the trigeminal and other peripheral nerves have been produced in the rat by means of nitrosourea compounds. These tumors have been culturedin vitro and the behavior of the grown cells has been studied with phase contrast optics including time-lapse cinematography. It was concluded that these experimental tumors are Schwann cell tumors. They differ from the common human Schwannoma in that they are malignant and produce no “microglia-like” cells. The malignant character of the cultured cells was apparent because of a) rapid growth, b) maintenancein vitro through continuous subculture for over 18 months, c) loss of contact inhibition and d) capacity to induce' malignant tumors when transplanted subcutaneously to isologous hosts.

Notes: Summary Cytophotometric investigations of lymphocytic populations of 4 sheeps were carried out to determine the diploid standard value for comparative investigations of lymph node cells from sheep with lymphatic leucosis. Inspite of exact and simultaneous preparation there were marked and significant differences in the histograms as well as in the diagrams of absorption level separation. Therefore, the control of several normal cell populations is essential before starting cytophotometric investigations of neoplastic cells.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung In Phytohämagglutinin-stimulierten Lymphocytenkulturen von Schafen konnten elektronenmikroskopisch C-Typ-Viruspartikel nachgewiesen werden.
Notes: Summary C-type virus particles were demonstrated by electron microscopy in phytohemagglutinin-stimulated lymphocyte cultures from sheep. Virus particles were observed in cultures from 7 animals with confirmed diagnosis of lymphatic leukosis or with persistent lymphocytosis, and not at all in cultures from 38 sheep of the same herd without signs of leukosis. It was concluded that the observation of virus particles in lymphocyte cultures may be associated with leukosis in sheep.

Description / Table of Contents: The structures of the tetragonally cristallizing compounds RbOCH3 and CsOCH3 have been determinde from X-ray powder diagrams (RbOCH3: a = 4.160, c = 8,704, Å; CsOCH3: a = 4.433, c = 8.576 Å; Z = 2; space group P4/nmm). The compounds are isostructural with KOCH3, forming layer structures with the CH3 groups on both sides of each layer and the cations in the central part, each cation being surrounded by 5 O-atoms in a tetragonal-pyramidal array. The already known structure of KOCH3 has been refined.
