Notes: Summary 1) 24 proteins of the small subunit of rat liver ribosomes were isolated by detachment of ribosomal proteins from the subunits bound to DEAE-Sephadex A-25 by LiCl and β-chlorethanol-HCl and subsequent ion exchange chromatography and gel filtration of the prefractionated protein mixtures. 2) The amino acid compositions of the isolated proteins are fairly similar, but most of them are different from each other. 3) The tryptic peptide patterns of the isolated proteins point to differences in the primary structure. 4) The molecular weights estimated by different methods are in the range from 9700 to 30 600. The mean value of the molecular weights is 19 200. 5) The number of proteins and the sum of their molecular weights point to an average of one copy of each protein per small ribosomal subunit.

Notes: Summary 1) From the total protein mixture of rat liver ribosomes 31 proteins were isolated by CM-cellulose chromatography and subsequent gel filtration on Sephadex G 100 or Biogel P 10. 2) Molecular weights of the proteins estimated by a sedimentation equilibrium method range from 10000 to 30000. The values are in good agreement with data obtained from gel filtrations on Biogel P 10 in 1.0 M propionic acid. 3) The amino acid compositions of the proteins are similar. They differ only in the content of certain amino acids. 4) Circular dichroic spectra of the proteins between 200 and 300 nm indicate a small content of ordered structures.
