Summary By studying their dimensions and proportions, muscular arteries distended postmortem by increased intraluminal pressure to their diameter during life may be readily differentiated from similar vessels showing postmortem contraction. In addition, the changes in the diameters of the arteries and in their walls due to ageing, which up until now could be followed micrometrically only on the postmortem contracted vessels, show that in the artificially distended vessels there is a different criterion of measurement which corresponds to the intravital relationships. Comparisons made of the arteries studied reveal: the relationship between the inner surface and the vascular volume apparently is more favorable for the nutrition of the vascular wall of the arteries of the arm than it is for the femoral artery. Furthermore, the proportions of the femoral artery, as compared with those of the arteries of the arm, most likely are indicative of a greater mechanical stress to the wall of the femoral artery. These peculiarities of the femoral artery, found as well in young adults, perhaps are important in this vessel becoming more severely sclerosed later in life.
Notes:
