Notes: Summary Bromination methods are described for determination of sulphide and disulphide groups in organic samples weighing onlyca. 50μg. Direct titration with visual end-point indication is suitable in some cases, but a back-titration method is of more general application. The accuracy obtained is of the same order as on much larger scales of working.

Notes: Summary The results of an investigation into the nature of the volatile pyrolysis products formed under the conditions of the Unterzaucher method for the microdetermination of oxygen are reported and discussed. These results have been compared with those obtained in a previous study, and it has been found that in the absence of platinised carbon some different pyrolytic products are formed. The pyrolysates were collected, and analysed by mass spectrometry.

Notes: Summary A new technique is described which enables organic compounds to be analysed for elements and functional groups using sample weights of 30–50 micrograms (0.03 to 0.05 mg). These amounts are only just visible to the naked eye. The accuracy is similar to that of the microscale, and the technique is fairly simple. It is expected that these methods will be of value in biochemistry and associated fields where amounts of sample are often limited. The new technique is not intended to replace micro-methods. Investigations are still proceeding to develop further methods for the determination of functional groups and to refine earlier procedures.
