Notizen: The reaction of gaseous components at a solid catalytic surface has long been a subject of prime engineering interest. Generally speaking one expects the reaction velocity constant to follow the Arrhenius exponential temperature dependence. However as the reaction temperature increases, the intrinsic reactivity of the surface will increase and mass transfer begins to limit the rate of the reaction. In the case of a porous solid catalyst, where most of the active surface is on the catalyst pellet interior, the rate-limiting process will frequently be internal diffusion, and in such a case the milder effect that temperature has on the diffusion process is the one observed in the gross kinetics, rather than the exponential Arrhenius dependence. The study reported here has examined the kinetics of the dehydrogenation of cyclohexane to benzene over a platinum-on-alumina pelleted catalyst. This is a notorious problem system, and in seeking to describe the observed rate data the authors provided a stern test for an analytical model treating the coordinate diffusion and reaction mechanisms. In particular the parameter of particle size was studied over a temperature range of from 640° to 910°F. For these runs reactor pressure was held constant at essentially 200 lb./sq. in. gauge (14.7 atm.), und the feed was maintained at 20 mole % cyclohexane, 80 mole % hydrogen.

Notizen: Constant pressure diffusion rates of hydrogen through Vycor porous glass were measured in nitrogen and neon systems. The experimental diffusivities are less than those predicted by the random pore model indicating that this model may not be satisfactory for a low porosity material such as Vycor. Interpreted in terms of an assembly of parallel pores the data suggest a tortuosity factor of approximately 2.4.Rate data for the ortho-para hydrogen reaction were also measured at -196°C. and 1 atm. The catalyst 2% nickel/Vycor was found to have pore properties (area, mean pore size, pore volume) similar to that of plain Vycor. Predicted effectiveness factors using the experimental diffusion data were in good agreement with values determined experimentally. The latter were evaluated from rate measurements on both pellet and particles (58 μ mean diameter).

Notizen: Reaction-rate measurements were made for the ortho-para hydrogen conversion at -196°C. at 1 atm. pressure with nickel oxide catalysts using alumina and silica gel as carriers. Data were obtained for fine particles for which pore-diffusion resistances were negligible, for large particles of silica catalysts containing only micropores, and for alumina pellets containing both micro- and macropores. From these data experimental effectiveness factors were evaluated.Theoretical effectiveness factors predicted by using a previous theory (7) agreed well with the experimental results. The application of the theory requires pore-geometry data. The measurement of these data and their use in predicting diffusion resistances are illustrated by experimental data and calculations for the several catalysts. It is shown that a satisfactory method of predicting the significance of diffusion within porous catalysts requires information on the pore volume and pore sizes.

Notizen: Entrance-region studies, based on static-pressure measurements, were carried out with water flowing in annuli and a circular tube fitted with interchangeable square or rounded entrance sections. The tests covered the Reynolds number range from 16,000 to 70,000. For the annuli, the length of duct required to approach to within 5% of the fully developed pressure gradient was about 20 to 25 hydraulic diameters. This is in general accord with entrance length results for circular tubes and parallel-plate channels but differs from prior results for the annulus which had indicated entrance lengths larger by a factor of ten. The results for the sharp entrance showed a definite effect of separation and were characterized by high loss coefficients. For the rounded entrance, the initial part of the flow development was laminar; the entrance-region pressure drop did not substantially exceed (and in one case was less than) the corresponding fully developed pressure drop. Also for the rounded entrance, flow stability was improved and a monotonically decreasing pressure gradient obtained when a turbulent boundary layer was induced by means of a trip. Fully developed friction factors were calculated and compared with theory.

Notizen: Mobile ions can be introduced thereby increasing the conductivity, with a limiting operating temperature range of 200°-250°C. Conductivity can be increased with the formation of conjugatd double bonds. Polymeric compounds may be synthesized with metallocyclic groups, where an atom of metal is bound to nitrogen atoms in a heterocyclic system in the basic chain of conjugation of the macromolecule. Here phtalocyanimes possess the greatest thermal stability. Lastly there are semiconducting polymers with conjugated double bonds containing hetero-atoms in the principle chain, having unpaired electrons of oxygen and nitrogen.

Notizen: Liquid-liquid extraction of acetic acid from the methyl isobutyl ketone-water system was studied as a function of plate wetting characteristics and other variables in a pulsed perforated-plate extraction column.Various combinations of stainless steel plates and polyethylene plates were used with different directions of solute transfer at a constant throughput of 82.6 lb. total flow/(min.) (sq. ft. column area) and with other operating variables in the following range:Frequency  -  16 to 117.1 c./min.Amplitude  -  0.492 and 0.973 in.W/K flow ratio  -  0.46 to 2.8 lb. water/lb. ketoneThe plate wetting characteristics were found to affect the column extraction efficiency when the solute transfer was from the continuous ketone phase to water. An all polyethylene plate arrangement provided the best efficiency (H. T. U.oc = 4.1 in.) while an all stainless steel plate arrangement was less efficient (H. T. U.oc = 6.1 in.) under the most favorable operating conditions. A combination of these two arrangements in the column produced efficiencies midway between the all-plastic plate arrangement and the all-stainless steel plate arrangement.Within the column flooding limits the extraction efficiency did not seem to be affected by the plate wetting characteristics when the solute transfer was from water to the continuous ketone phase.
